From the CEO’s desk

Dear Friends,

The Asian Trails Group has had a productive show at the recent ASEAN Tourism Forum in Singapore. One discernible travel trend at this year’s ATF is Europe continues to be the strongest producing market for trips to South East Asia, and traffic from Eastern Europe is gaining in volume year by year.

We are also happy to see increased interest in tours to Thailand and Indochina from Asian producing countries, particularly Singapore and Hong Kong.

The BIG news for now in Bangkok is, because of some operational problems at the new Suwannabhumi Airport, the government has decided to re-open the old Don Muang airport from late March, 2007 for just point-to-point domestic flights. Details of the airlines using Don Muang have yet to be finalised. Amazing Thailand indeed!

The ASIAN TRAILS team looks forward to meet with many of you during the forthcoming ITB in Berlin where we will be in Hall 26b, stand 204.

HAPPY TRAILS!

Luzi A. Matzig

CEO

POI SANG LONG

Amphoe Khun Yuam, Mae Hong Son, April 2007

Amphoe Khun Yuam in Mae Hong Son is one of Thailand's most naturally scenic areas and home to a number of hilltribe communities. The Poi Sang Long is the celebration of novice ordination, which is a highly meritorious occasion for the Thai Yai people. It is usually held between March to May before the Buddhist Rain Retreat period.

According to traditions the candidate-novice has, his head cleanly shaven and wrapped in a head-cloth in the Burmese style, dressed in a prince-like garment and adorned with valuable jewels and gems. He then either rides a horse or is carried over the shoulders of a man to the city shrine. On the eve of the ordination a procession of offerings and other necessary personal belongings are paraded through the streets and then placed at the monastery where the ceremony will take place.

ASTRO-ARCHAEOLOGICAL PHENOMENON AT PRASAT HIN KHAO PHANOM RUNG

Phanom Rung Historical Park, Buri Ram, 8–9 April 2007

Prasat Hin Khao Phanom Rung is the second most significant Khmer-style temple in Northeastern Thailand or I-San.  Although often overlooked on account of the famed Angkor city complex in Cambodia, the Khmer monuments of I-san represent key architectural milestones in the development of Angkorean design and ritual. In fact virtually every Angkor-period monument played a role in an elaborate cosmology that linked the entire network, a part of which lay in what is today Thailand.

Astrologers have predicted that an extraordinary astro-archaeological phenomenon will occur at sunrise from 8-9 April. The doors of the temple sanctuary are so perfectly aligned that during these designated days, at sunrise on a cloudless day with clear blue skies, the sun’s rays will shine through all its 15 doorways in a single shaft of light.

If you wish to catch this spectacular sight plan your arrival at the sanctuary between sunrise and no later than 06.00 hrs.

SONGKRAN FESTIVAL

Nationwide, April 2007

Songkran, the traditional Thai custom of merry-making is the Kingdom's most 'sanuk' (fun-filled) festival, celebrated nationwide yearly with great enthusiasm. In most parts of the country the Songkran celebrations last for three days.

The festival is known the world over for its tradition of water throwing, You can be subject to a courteous sprinkle or a polite splash, or a drenching from water pistols, garden hoses, water-filled buckets or water-cannons, all delivered in the good spirit of the festival. Without a doubt, on the practical side, Songkran is a refreshing solution to "beating the heat" in April, Thailand’s hottest season.

There is, however, a much deeper significance to Songkran. Apart from marking a new beginning it is also a time for thanksgiving. This is an important time for individuals to reflect upon the many acts of kindness and thoughtfulness each has personally experienced. It is also a time to remember how such acts of generosity and compassion bring peace, happiness and well being.  Songkran is also the time for reunions when family ties are renewed

THE NORTHERN HERITAGE ROUTE

The two northeastern provinces of Houaphan and Xieng Khouang are yet to be put on the tourist map. In January Luzi Matzig, his wife Viparat and I went on a survey to review this less travelled corner of Laos.

Picture (from left): Viparat, Luzi Matzig & Annette Monreal at the Plains of Jars

During the five-day overland tour we experienced an intriguingly remote area, laden with history and endless mountain landscapes. We started in Vientiane, took the not yet officially open road via Paksane to Muang Khoun, und started our cultural tour with a visit of the Plain of Jars.

On the elevated plateau of Xieng Khouang hundreds of monolithic jars, which are over 2,000 years old, are scattered in more than 50 different places. Only the three largest sites are open to tourists. The origin of this exceptional cultural site remains a mystery until today. But a necropolis is seen as most likely. The area is still heavily littered with unexploded ordinance (UXO) dating from the Indochina War, so it is advised to follow the path that is cleared.

Regular flights operate between Vientiane and Phonsavan. Recommended accommodations are the Phouphadaeng Resort, Phouchan Resort and Vansana Hotel.

Our ultimate destination was Vieng Xay (pictured right) located in the far east of Houaphan province, only 52 km west of the border to Vietnam. Vieng Xay is the name of a “hidden city of caves” used as the wartime headquarters of the Lao revolutionary movement Pathet Lao. Thousands of people lived and worked in the caves during nine years of bombing. Laos became a target of the Americans in the secret war from 1964-1973. The caves served as homes for the leaders, as conference rooms and as a hospital. There was even a theatre! You can visit the caves on guided tours operated by the Vieng Xay Tourism office.

The international border point at Nameo makes a tour to/from Hanoi possible. This spectacular trip requires good stamina as the roads wind across mountainous regions, often at a great height. Most visitors stay in Xam Neua, but guesthouse accommodation is also available in Vieng Xay.

Hintang Archeological Site is another secret highlight of the region. Heading towards Xam Neua, it is located about 60 km north of the junction Phou Lao, where the road from Xieng Khouang Province meets the road from Luang Prabang. The so called “Standing Stones” (pictured left) are thin slabs arranged in groups, marking ancient graves estimated at 2,500 years old. Hintang is believed to predate the monolithic jars of Xieng Khouang.

Until now, the northeastern region bordering Vietnam has mainly been visitedby backpackers. But the area offers a unique insight into recent and the most ancient Lao history. It is home to the Hmong ethnic as well as Tai Dam, Tai Kao and Tai Daeng. The latter people are well known silk weavers, arguably producing the finest textiles in Laos.

We recommend the Northern Heritage Route for special interest groups or keen explorers looking for a new route between Laos and Vietnam.

NEWS UPDATE

NEW THAI-LAO FRIENDSHIP BRIDGE OPENS IN SAVANNAKHET

On 20 December 2006 the second Friendship Bridge, spanning the Mekong between Thailand and Laos, was officially opened. It links Savannakhet, Lao’s largest economic centre. with the Thai province of Mukdahan. The 1.6 km long bridge was financed by Japan and forms part of a newly established east-west corridor leading from Thailand through Laos to Danang on the coast of Vietnam. After entering Laos the recently upgraded Highway No. 9 leads from Savannakhet to the Vietnam border point at Lao Bao.

AN UPDATE ON SPEEDBOATS’ SERVICES

At the beginning of this year the Lao government stopped the operation of speedboats plying the Mekong, between Houay Xai and Luang Prabang. These boats were not operating temporarily due to their horrendous noise and low safety level. Since 24 January the speedboats - now equipped with compulsory silencers - are back in business. However boats from/to Houay Xai cannot continue further than Pak Tha, leaving 50 km road travel to Houay Xai.

Asian Trials Laos does not recommend speedboats. However some tours include this means of transport on stretches of the Mekong where slow boats are unable to navigate through the rapids, such as to the north of Houay Xai.

BUSES BANNED FROM LUANG PRABANG’S HISTORICAL ZONE

Following the ban on large 45-seater buses from the peninsula of Luang Prabang, coaster buses (25 seats) will also officially not allowed to enter the area from May 2007.

During the next high season Asian Trails Laos will provide either minibuses/vans of up to nine seats, tuk tuks or boats for the visit by car to the historic zone number 1. The protected zone starts east of the crossroad by the GPO, at the foot of Phousi Hill.

ELEPHANT FESTIVAL IN HONGSA

The first Elephant Festival ever held in Laos took place in Hongsa, Xaignabouri Province on 17-18 February. Hongsa first started with an elephant clinic and today is one of the main elephant centrws in Laos. The festival attracted a large number of spectators, from foreign tourist, expatriates to, locals who were given the opportunity to see elephants, usually employed in logging, performing other feats. They were entertained to an elephant parade, an “Elefant of the year contest”, elephant riding and racing. As the festival was a great success, don’t forget to include it into your travel plans for next year!

VIETNAM

A note from Managing Director Thuy Tien

For the past two years Vietnam has been short of hotel rooms in its major cities - Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh - due to the increasing demand. Tour operators, especially, face difficulties in finding rooms for their clients as many hotels tend to sell at higher rates to corporate accounts and walk-in guests. This situation has lead to frustrated travel agents from oversea and has also cost the local tour operators plenty of time in searching for rooms. Not only is Vietnam’s tourism industry growing, but also is its economy in general. Unfortunately not many new hotels have opened in the last three years in Hanoi and Saigon.

However the scenario may soon change in the near future. It has been in the news that the nation is planning to have 170,000 new hotels rooms by 2010 to meet the demand of the growing numbers of foreign and domestic tourists.

Currently Vietnam has 142,000 hotel rooms from over 7,000 places of accommodation, including 25 official five star hotels, 64 four star hotels and 135 three star hotels. This means the number of existing rooms will more then double in the coming three years, according to the local authorities. The administration also plans to carry out different projects on training staff in the tourism sector nationwide in hotel and tourism schools.

We are very excited and look forward to the opening of more hotels in the next few years that will meet three-to five-star standards. We will keep you updated on any new hotels opening in the future.

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS - HANOI IN STYLE

CITY TOUR IN A VINTAGE CAR

For those who are enchanted by the charm of the colonial architecture in Hanoi we suggest a city tour through the capital in one of the still functional vintage cars. The Sofitel Metropole in Hanoi, for example, offers excursions with a Citroen 15, an old timer manufactured shortly after the Second World War. All major sights in Hanoi are easy accessible with the “Queen of the Road”, as the French nicknamed this car.

Please contact us for more details at: asiantrails@hcm.vnn.vn.

MOON RIVER RETREAT, HANOI

This very charming guesthouse is situated on the banks of the Red River in Hanoi. It is set in a very quiet place only three kilometres from the city centre. The absolutely peaceful retreat can be reached either by car or by boat from its little pier.

Moon River has only four rooms, in different shapes and sizes.

All are fully decorated in a refined century- old traditional Vietnamese style and have modern, well-equipped private bathrooms.

The guesthouse is set in two buildings with a marvellous patio overlooking the river where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner al fresco, cooked and served by the restaurant of the Moon River. All in all, this is a great accommodation option in Hanoi and just the perfect place to relax and forget about the bustling life outside its walls. Please contact us for more information and rates at: asiantrails@hcm.vnn.vn.

TEAM BUILDING IN VIETNAM

Asian Trails Vietnam is now offering team-building activities in collaboration with a specialised partner. These activities are not only great fun but also one of the best ways to learn and understand how groups of people working in the same direction and putting their energy in achieving the same goal can reach their goal with more effectiveness, easier and faster.

The Asian Trails Team, based in Ho Chi Minh City, had the opportunity to enjoy a day of experimental learning before the TET holidays. We took the opportunity to know each other a little better, as well as to learn a bit more about such important aspects as leadership, communications, teamwork and cooperation.

You can add team-building activities to an incentive itinerary for groups and they can be carried out in a park or even on the beach.

HOTEL UPDATE

NEW SIX SENSES PROPERTY IN DALAT

Six Senses Resorts & Spa has opened the Evason Ana Mandara in Dalat in January. It comprises architecturally different French colonial villas, with most built in the architecture style of the first half of the 20th Century.

Currently five of a total of 17 villas comprising 57 different suites, studios and rooms, are operational, with the rest to be ready soon. Another two villas have been converted into the restaurant and the Six Senses Spa. The main restaurant, which provides inside and outside dining, serves a fusion of European and Asian cuisine.

Dalat, with its mild climate and green hills, is still a popular place to escape during the hot summer months in the South. The area is ideal for activities such as hiking and biking. It also has one of the oldest golf courses in whole South East Asia.

Vietnam Airlines operates one daily flight between Ho Chi Minh City and Dalat. The journey by car between the two cities takes six hours.

SOFITEL METROPOLE HANOI OPENS OPERA WING

Hanoi’s most historical hotel has launched the hotel’s 157-room “Opera Wing” (former New Wing) after a renovation period in the second half of 2006. The rooms are decorated with a touch of the Renaissance and are equipped with the latest 21st century technology and amenities.

The aim of the hotel’s management and owners was to find a balance between the renovated Opera Wing and the legendary Metropole Wing. As such all the Premium rooms in the Opera Wing were renamed Opera rooms. The Deluxe rooms no longer exist. No changes were made to the Classical and Classical Deluxe rooms of the Metropole Wing.

BEACH UPDATE FOR HOTELS IN MUI NE

As has happened last year some of the hotels in Mui Ne are still facing problems with their beach. Part of the sand in front of their properties has been literally washed away by the changing current.

Last year The Seahorse and the newly opened Terracotta Resort built walls with steps (similar to a stair) to protect their land. The sun chairs and umbrellas for sunbathers are nicely set on top of the wall. The water only reaches the wall during high tide in the afternoon. Swimming is still possible, and there is only a little bit a visual effect for some cases (Sailing Club and Cham Villa).

For further information on other hotels, please contact us at: asiantrails@hcm.vnn.vn.

MYANMAR

A note from General Manager Mika Itavaara

The high season is still keeping us very busy here in Myanmar. Last month was very exciting as we were handling two incentive groups from Israel at the same time. We encountered new challenges of shuffling around kosher food boxes to different stations and trying to keep the food frozen in the sweltering heat.     In Bagan, to our surprise, the local authorities introduced new rules and regulations regarding temple dinners. We also learned recently that Sittwe Airport would be closed for four days per week due to urgent repair works.

NEWS UPDATE

10-DAY HOLIDAY FOR THINGYAN WATER FESTIVAL

The Myanmar government has announced an extended public holiday period for the Thingyan Water Festival in April 2007. This festival is normally celebrated in mid-April for five days. The new-gazetted holiday dates for 2007 are 13-22 April.

Our office will be closed during these dates. Our duty staff will be at your service as usual.

ASIAN TRAILS MYANMAR EXPANDS

We would like to welcome our new ATM staff - Ms Nang Nang, Ms Su Nanda, Ms Zin Mar Ni and Ms K Thwe Aung – to the reservations department and Ms Theingi to our ticketing department.

The other new members of the ATM team, who recently joined our company, are Mr Saw Tint Wai as Assistant Accounts Manager and Ms Myo Myo Aye as accounting assistant.

VALUE OF CARS AND BUSES REACHES 10-YEAR HIGH IN MYANMAR

The high demand for vehicles, trade restrictions, import regulations of spare parts and tight customs formalities have increased their value in the country to a 10-year record high. For example the going market rate for an old 1980’s model Toyota or Mazda is now around USD 20,000. New import licenses are not easy to obtain and fetch a very high price in Myanmar for the time being.

RISING FUEL PRICES

Diesel and petrol prices have been increasing dramatically during the last year in Myanmar and still continue to climb up. Within the last three months the transportation costs have increased by 20-40%. Many fuel suppliers, speculators and transportation suppliers have resorted to stocking up their fuel reserves, in case of shortages in the supply.

NEW REGULATIONS FOR BAGAN TEMPLE DINNERS

In early February 2007 the Archeological Department of the Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs announced new regulations and restrictions for arranging temple dinners in Bagan. According to the new regulations, temple dinners inside some of the compounds will not be granted any more. These will need to be either held outside of the compound, subject to official approval, or at another site. On some occasions we have substituted our usual sites with new and equally charming venues. Please contact our office for further information.

RENOVATIONS! - Governor’s Residence Hotel, Yangon

The Governor’s Residence Hotel will close for renovations from 1 May until 15 July. New amenities will be added to the rooms, while some rooms will be upgraded to higher category suites.

RECOMMENDED! - Bago Bistro @ Summit Park View Hotel

A new restaurant concept has been introduced at the Summit Park View Hotel. One wing of the main restaurant area has been closed off, redecorated and converted to a simple but cosy “haute cuisine” haven – the Bago Bistro. It targets guests who wish to enjoy fine dining at affordable rates.

Two new delicious and innovative three-four course set menus are introduced on weekly basis, in the spirit of East meets West. The restaurant also features a nice selection of international wines.

The Bago Bistro is a creation of the new Executive Chef Michel Meca, who has recently joined the Summit as head of the hotel’s F&B team. He was formerly with the boutique hotel, Governor’s Residence Hotel

COUNTRY UPDATE

SITTWE AIRPORT CLOSES FROM 16 FEBRUARY-31 MARCH

The Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) has announced, with short notice, the closure of Sittwe Airport for four days per week as of 16 February until 31 March. Extensive repair works will be made to the runway before the end of fiscal year.

The airport will remain open on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays.

ROAD CONDITIONS

Yangon - Ngwe Saung

We would like to remind you that driving to Ngwe Saung is taking slightly longer this year than last year. The condition of the Yangon-Ngwe Saung road deteriorated considerably during the last rainy season when extensive flooding occurred. Additionally, heavy traffic between Yangon and Pathein has also made the condition even worse. The annual repair works are only now starting to take place.

The driving time to Ngwe Saung is now five hours by car and six hours by bus.

Bagan - Kalaw

The road condition from Bagan to Kalaw has also deteriorated considerably from last year due to heavy rains and erosion from heavy traffic. For the time being we do not recommend this 10-12 hour overland journey on heavily potholed and bumpy roads. We recommend flying from Bagan to Heho instead.

Pindaya

The road leading to Pindaya from Aung Ban town is also in dreadful condition. There are more potholes than before and some parts of the pavement have crumbled off from the sides, requiring slow and careful negotiations to pass other vehicles.

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS – SABAH

“THE “LAND BELOW THE WIND”

Sabah, or the “Land Below the Wind”, at the north eastern tip of Borneo is the gateway to fascinating cultures, beautiful scenery and magical islands, offering a variety of attractions, from the world-famous diving haven of Sipadan Island to the Orangutan Rehabilitation Sanctuary in Sepilok and the famed Turtle Island.

Sabah’s beautiful islands, off its coastlines on both its eastern and western regions, are much sought after by divers as its waters are rich in coral reefs and marine life. The ecological richness of Sabah has given birth to a whole host of nature-based activities - climb Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in South East Asia (pictured above), or play with the gentle Orangutan primates in Sepilok. The national parks are not to be missed too as they are treasure troves of a vast variety of flora and fauna.
