FESTIVALS IN THAILAND
THE ROYAL PLOUGHING CEREMONY: Ancient Rituals for a Bountiful Harvest Sanam Luang (Royal Field), 11 May 2007
The Royal Ploughing Ceremony is an ancient Brahminical rite dating back to the Sukhothai period (1257-1350 AD). The ceremony, which heralded the start of the new rice-growing season, was performed to ensure a successful planting season and an abundance of the nation's crops. Festivities were held to boost the farmers' morale, urging them to strive for an abundant harvest for consumption and to ensure sufficient reserves for times of war and for export overseas. Today, the Royal Ploughing Ceremony consists of two ceremonies - a Cultivating Ceremony known as “Phraraj Pithi Peuj Mongkol” and the Ploughing Ceremony, “Phraraj Pithi Jarod Phranangkal Raek Na Kwan”. Both royal ceremonies are state events with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives assuming the role of the Lord of the Harvest or “Phraya Raek Na”. Four single female officials of the Ministry, who hold positions of second rank and above in the civil service, undertake the role of the Celestial Maidens or “Nang Thepi”, assistants to the Lord of the Harvest.

PHI TA KHON FESTIVAL 2007 Dan Sai District, Loei Province, 23-24 June 2007
The Phi Ta Khon Festival is unique to the Dan Sai district in Loei Province and reflects the local Isan belief in ghosts and spirits. Held once a year it is part of a grand merit-making festival known as the “Boon Luang” Festival. The origins of the Phi Ta Khon Festival can be found in the tale of Lord Buddha's last great incarnation before attaining Enlightenment. According to Buddhist historical accounts when Prince Vessandara, the Buddha's penultimate incarnation, returned to his city it was such a joyous occasion that the village spirits came forth to join the welcoming parade. This very colourful and vibrant Phi Ta Khon procession is the central focus of the celebrations. In a lively re-enactment of the tale the young men of the community dressed up as “spirits” wearing long trailing costumes made from colourful strips of cloth sewn together.

A note from Managing Director Annette Monreal
We wish all friends and colleagues Sabaidee Pii Mai!

... May all bad spirits be left behind and all good spirits liven up 2550.
The Buddhist New Year is the most important holiday in the Lao calendar and for many the only time of year when a few days can be spent with their families in far away hometowns. This year’s festivities were blessed with the first rains, a special sign of luck. From 13-18 April all businesses came to a standstill. Shops and offices wee closed and water splashing and party life took place on the country’s streets. Baci ceremonies (pictured above) were held everywhere to welcome the New Year and wish family and friends good luck.
For Asian Trails Laos the New Year has started remarkably well. On 27 April we finally received our own official Travel Agency license. The long awaited document opens up all possibilities to invest in tour operations in Laos and this will undoubtedly bring further growth and prosperity for Asian Trails Laos. More on this exciting development in the next issue of Trailblazer as the deadline for this issue was at around the same time as the handing over of the license by the Lao National Tourism Administration.
ASIAN TRAILS DIRECTORS MEETING IN VIENTIANE

On 6 April the Asian Trails Board of Directors meeting took place in Laos, Vientiane. The event at the Green Park Hotel included an evening at the Lao Textile Museum (see under Product Update) and a two-day trip to Khammouane Province in central Laos. The limestone forests northeast of Thakhek are among the least explored areas in Laos. Dotted with rugged karsts and innumerable caves Khammouane is becoming a favourite among those who want to leave behind all beaten tracks. The Asian Trails Directors’ adventure trip was operated by our local partner Green Discovery, the first private travel company to open up more than a handful of tours into this region. Green Discovery trips include camping in the forests or staying with local families. The villagers are prepared and have been trained to receive tourists with development funds. For more information please visit the company’s website: www.greendiscoverylaos.com
The best-known tourist attraction in Khammouane is the 6.5km long Konglo Cave (pictured left). A river passes all the way through the cave enabling visitors to explore the cave by boat or by kayak. In April the villages around the Konglo Cave celebrated the five-year anniversary of its opening to tourists and a newly paved road (2007), which gives the villages year-round access. Driving time from Vientiane to the limestone forests of Khammouane Province is four and a half hours. Thai International flies to/from Nakhorn Phanom, the most direct way to reach Thakhek. The border crossing at Thakhek is 20 minutes by boat over the Mekong. The airport in Nakhorn Phanom is a 20-minute journey from the Mekong.

A note from Managing Director Thuy Tien
The high season in Vietnam is slowly coming to an end after four very busy months in 2007. According to estimates, Vietnam has attracted over one million foreign visitors in the first quarter of this year. Compared to the same period last year this would mean an increase of 13 per cent. The number of foreign visitors to Hanoi is over 300,000 and its big sister, Ho Chi Minh City, received even more visitors - 700,000+. March was the strongest month out of the four months surveyed, with 360,000 visitors entering Vietnam. The majority of visitors to Vietnam are from China, USA, South Korea and Japan. As Vietnam gains more and more popularity as a tourism destination and also due its booming economy, we are confident that the arrival numbers will increase in the future as well.

A note from General Manager Mika Itavaara
Happy (Thingyan) New Year from all Asian Trails Myanmar staff!!! A New Year has started and our office is back in full operation after the extended public holidays this year. Several members of our team joined meditation centres for the holiday season while others celebrated water throwing together with family and colleagues. The wildest celebrations took place in Yangon and Mandalay where large music and water spraying stages were erected and millions of people were out for fun and play.
SURVEY TRIP TO THE HIMALAYAS OF SOUTHEAST ASIA
Nearly three hours’ flight away from Yangon rests Putao, the northernmost town of the Kachin State, surrounded by lush rain forests and snow capped mountains in the horizon. This town is a collection of a few streets, basic stores and tea shops and has a real village feeling to it.
Due the region’s isolation and bad road connection (only one barely passable road) the forests and wildlife have remained relatively untouched until now. Northern Myanmar is truly one of the last and least explored wilderness areas of Southeast Asia and a fantastic destination for explorers and nature lovers. Very few visitors now make it this far north. Package travel permits are still required. This is rather a time-consuming process, but no more a difficulty for tour operators to arrange.
The attractions of the region, apart from its great scenery, are the charming villages of Lisu and Rawang minorities where foreign visitors are very warmly welcomed, and activities such as cycling, elephant riding, rafting and hikes of various lengths and difficulty.
Our recommendation: Enjoy the comfort of the luxurious Malikha Lodge, which is located a few kilometres outside of Putao in a local village by the Malikha River. It offers all-inclusive packages and is an ideal base for excursions and daily activities. Or just to pamper oneself with world-class spa treatments and enjoy a cosy log fire amidst the ambience of the well appointed lodge and chalet suites.

A note from Managing Director Serge Huber
Asian Trails Malaysia is happy to announce a new member to the team to help manage our expanding inbound business. Ms Josianne Jacqueline Koshy joined our company as Inbound/Operations executive in April 2007. To meet with our expanding business our office has been now been separated into two floors. The reservations department is located on the first floor while the inbound operations and account department remain on the second floor.
OUR RECOMMENDATIONS: TAMAN NEGARA (NATIONAL PARK)
Taman Negara, Malaysia’s best known National Park, straddles the borders of the three east coast states of Pahang, Terengganu and Pahang. It is one of the world's oldest tropical rain forests and the diversity of its fauna and flora is a result of undisturbed evolution over 130 million years. Taman Negara is a great destination for nature lovers. It offers a variety of activities that include trekking made enjoyable with the good network of jungle trails and the availability of expert guides. It is also noted for fishing, especially along the upper reaches of the Tahan or Kenyam rivers, and for rafting at the rapids of Sungai Tembeling.
Gunung Tahan (2,187 meters), Peninsular Malaysia's highest mountain, is located in Taman Negara and climbing the mountain is an unforgettable experience. Due to the scarcity of water along the route the journey must be done in two stages and an experienced guide is compulsory. At least three days are required for the journey to the summit and back.

Once affixed to the boats, a Taoist priest performs rituals accompanied by the burning of incense and firecrackers to bring the boats to 'life.' The race is a colourful and joyous event greatly enjoyed by all. Enthusiastic spectators cheer as the race kicks off with the slow beating of drums, which increases steadily to end in a frenzied crescendo as the boats speed across the finish line.

Personal recommendation of Managing Director Renato Domini
In this issue I would like to introduce to you The Shaba Bali. It belongs to the same owners of Villa Balquisse in Jimbaran.
The Shaba, located in Uluwatu, stands out with its unique, oriental, classical and colonial architecture. The residence consists of a total of three rooms - one suite and two deluxe rooms.
I recommend this property for guests interested in deco, repeaters, or just guests who like to try out different things or of course for wedding, cocktail receptions/parties.

NEWS UPDATE
NEW CARRY-ON LUGGAGE RULES AT BALI AIRPORT Effective 31 March 2007 the rules governing permissible carry-on items have changed for international passengers traveling via Bali's Ngurah Rai Airport. The new rules fall into line with tighter security controls being introduced by airports worldwide. Changes in carry-on rules broadly address the carriage of Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAGs) and specifically stipulate: • The maximum size of any liquid container, full or partially used, allowed past the international screening point is 100 ml. • All 100 ml liquid containers presented for inspection to be carried on board an aircraft by a passenger must comfortably fit in a one-litre transparent re-sealable plastic bag (30cm x 40cm). • The definition of (LAGs) liquids, aerosols and gels include, but are not limited to, water and other drinks; soups; syrups; jams; stews; sauces; pastes; foods in sauces or containing a high liquid content; creams; lotions; cosmetics; oils; perfumes; sprays; gels, including hair and shower gels; contents of pressurised containers, including shaving foam, other foam and deodorants; pastes including toothpaste; liquid-solid mixtures; mascara; lipsticks; lip gloss or lip balm; and any item of similar consistency at room temperature. This list is not exhaustive and screeners will make a determination about which items are permitted to be taken through screening points. • Each passenger is limited to carrying only one plastic bag. • All passengers must submit their person and all carry-on luggage for inspection. Baggage will receive both a visual inspection and x-ray examination. • Passengers will be required to remove bulky coats and jackets and present them for screening before walking through the metal detector. • Some medicines and medical devices are exempted from the new screening rules, including prescription medicine and prescribed medical devices. Passengers are recommended to bring supporting documentation (e.g. a physician's letter). All prescription medication should be in original containers bearing the name of the passenger matching the name on the boarding pass. Essential prescribed medicines may include angina sprays. • Passengers bring non-prescription medications should know that a determination of a reasonable amount will be made based on the length of the flight, possible delays and flight diversions; essential non-prescription medicines may include cough syrups, children’s medications, insulin, clotting factors (for hemophiliacs), contact lens solution exceeding 100 ml, and inhalers (with spare canisters packed into checked baggage). • Existing provisions for disability and medically-related items still apply. • Baby products required for the flight are exempt from the enhanced security screening restrictions with the understanding that screeners will use their discretion to assess appropriate volumes for hand carriage. Baby products include: baby milk; sterilised water; baby juice; baby food in liquid, gel or paste form; and wet wipes. • Under the new rules frisk searches will be conducted in a random and continuous manner. Frisk searches must be undertaken by a screener of the same sex and a passenger may request the search be done in a private room. A person may refuse a frisk search, however, they will be refused access into the sterile area. • Passengers are allowed to carry on board all liquids/aerosols/gels purchased or collected in the sterile area of an Indonesian international airport on board an aircraft, including duty free items, unless other jurisdictional measures apply (e.g. U.S. flights).
