SURIN ELEPHANT ROUND-UP AND ELEPHANT SHOW
Srinarong Stadium, Surin Province
17-18 November 2007
The Surin Elephant Round-up takes place in Surin Province. It was first held in 1960. The people of Surin were traditionally excellent at capturing elephants in Cambodia, then training them as working animals. Civil war in Cambodia and the elephant's decreasing economic importance has forced the elephant handlers to turn to entertainment to make a living. The event consists of a series of shows displaying the strength and skill of the animals, such as football games and tug-of-war.
The majestic Thai elephant has long been a central element in Thai culture and has held a respected place in Thai history. The ancient kings revered the elephant as a symbol of power and grace. Elephants have been prominently featured in Thai legend, literature, art and architecture. During the reign of King Rama II an image of the auspicious elephant, symbol of the King, was featured on the national flag.

LOI KRATHONG–FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS & ILLUMINATED BOATS PROCESSION

PRODUCT UPDATE
NEW ROUTE: VIENTIANE – NAM NGUM LAKE – VANG VIENG
The Vientiane office recently went on a joint trip to investigate an alternative route between Vientiane and Vang Vieng. Below is our recommendation for this very scenic and relaxing short tour.
Leave Vientiane on Route 13 and head t owards the Nam Ngum Lake via Th a Ngon and Ban Keun. In parts this road follows the laid back Nam Ngum River. Boat trips are popular. You will also get the chance to taste some freshly caught river fish in a floating restaurant. If you leave Vientiane in the afternoon and have to stay overnight the Vansana Nam Ngum (pictured) is the perfect place. It has comfortable rooms, a terrace by the river to relax and a pool. The somewhat archaic salt mines at Ban Keun is a must-visit place.
Continue on to the Nam Ngum Lake and past the dam creating this vast reservoir. Enjoy a boat trip past the dozens of lonely islands. Groups can book lunch on a boat! The lake is most scenic during and after the rainy months. At the height of the dry season the water recedes leaving large stretches of sand. Overnight in Talat is possible in a rustic but good value guesthouse with lake view.
Our favourites in Vang Vieng
Vang Vieng is reached in less than two hours from the Nam Ngum Lake. The karst peak backdrop of Vang Vieng has all it takes to feel relaxed. Activities like bathing, taking a boat ride or a stroll through the paddies are a must. The Vansana Van Vieng (pictured left) offers comfortable rooms and a lovely pool area. The newly renovated Villa Nam Song (pictured right) has nice room, which lead to a garden and a terrace for enjoying the view of the River Nam Song.
The Elefant Crossing offers a similar standard for larger groups.
Happy trails in Laos!

We have the pleasure to announce three new members who recently joined the Asian Trails Vietnam team.

He them continued with his professional career overseas. Mr Pham is now back in his homeland to take up his new challenge with Asian Trails Vietnam.
Mr. Maurizio Mandl, our new Customer Relations Coordinator in the south, is joining the head office in Ho Chi Minh. Previously based in Myanmar he has been working for Asian Trails for the last few years. He is joining the Vietnamese team for the upcoming high season. His familiarity with the company and the fact that he speaks Italian, German, French, English and Spanish are very strong points for his new position. He will surely be a great asset to the company as well as to our guests.
We welcome our three new colleagues and wish them all a great time and good luck in their new positions.
NEWS UPDATE
TET 2008
The Lunar New Year, Tet, will fall on 7 February 2008. It will herald the end of the Year of the Pig and usher in the Year of the Rat. Tet holidays are the period when the Vietnamese people travel the most within the year to reunite with their families.
During Tet most of the tourist attractions will be closed for about 10 days. This means markets will not be opened, museums may close, transportation will not be available due to drivers vacationing, airports will be overcrowded, restaurants will not serve meals and, in general, tours will be affected in several ways and will not run as scheduled. We may be unable to provide guides and other services. We thus strongly advise our guests not to travel during this period.
BORDER CROSSING WITH LAOS
Vietnam shares a border of around 2,000 kilometres with Laos on the west. Over all the bordering frontier there are five border points opened:
-
Na Meo in the northwest, opened on 2004, connects with Laos Hua Phan Province. Tay Trang (Dien Bien Phu), in the northwest as well, is only 34 km west of the city of Dien Bien Phu.
-
Lao Bao, in north-central Vietnam, links the city of Vinh with the town of Lak Xao in Laos. This is the most popular border crossing for overland travellers between these two countries.
-
Cau Treo, in the centre, is the closest to Hue in Vietnam and links with the southern Laos town of Savannakhet.
-
Bo Y (Kon Tum), close to the limit of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, is the perfect point if you are interested in reaching the southern provinces of Laos - Salavan, Sekong and Attapeu
-
There is yet another point opened for crossing the border at Nam Khan but it is inconvenient as the Vietnamese side is not close to any major city.
NEW PRODUCTS

A note from Group Managing Director Laurent Kuenzle
Myanmar has gone through some difficult weeks as you all would have seen through your news channels. We would like to express our thanks for the many kind and comforting words we have received from all over the world. We are very touched by your thoughts.
Life has again resumed its daily course and peaceful days have returned to Myanmar. Being in the country today one can hardly believe that anything has happened at all. The streets are full of cars, markets are full of people, temples and pagodas are filled with monks.
The entire tourism infrastructure is operating as it always has at this time of the year. All hotels, including beach resorts, are opened, restaurants are back in business, domestic airlines are flying, trains are operating and boats are plying their usual routes. And tour guides are ready to welcome visitors.
Most countries have changed their travel advisories to the usual security level. Security issues have turned into moral questions whether tourism supports the Myanmar people or the military government. Anyone who has ever travelled to Myanmar knows the answer, and the fact that tourism directly benefits the Myanmar people. We look forward to welcome many visitors to one of the most beautiful countries in the world.
COUNTRY UPDATE
In this issue of Trailblazer issue we give you an update on the tourism operations in the country as there appears to be many kinds of media coverage of Myanmar, which is not always based on facts.

Update: VISA AND BORDER PERMITS TO MYANMAR
There has not been any change to the Myanmar government policy on tourist visas. Tourists are welcome to the country. Visas are being issued as per normal at Myanmar consulates and embassies around the world. Pre-arranged Visa-on-Arrival is still available, which we will obtain from Naypyidaw as usual. The application time is same as before - approximately three weeks - no change. Border permits application time remains same as before – one month.
Normal visa applications may take longer to apply than before due to more careful screening procedures in the overseas embassies. If you experience any difficulty in visa application please contact us.

HOTEL OPERATIONS
All our contracted hotels are open for business in Myanmar and have not closed down as some media has reported recently.
Due to lower than anticipated guest numbers in October some hotels came up with special weekend promotions for local market and expatriates living in Yangon. Some hotels, which have a large number of staff, introduced temporarily a rotating leave system for the month of October. In November business is back to normal and there will no more special promotions.
Many of the top hotels are still nearly fully booked in November regardless to the cancellations that came following the September demonstrations.
DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT SCHEDULES RETURN TO NORMAL
Following the late September demonstrations a curfew was issued for Yangon and Mandalay. Due to the restricted operational hours all airlines were obliged to amend their flight schedules. As of 20 October 2007 the already relaxed curfew was completely lifted.
All airlines temporarily reduced their operating density due to a drop of tourist arrivals in October, but are resuming business as usual from November with higher yield.
Domestic flight schedules are now back to normal in Myanmar and flight operations are as before the September demonstrations.
On the international sector Air Bagan, which has just started flying to the Yangon-Singapore sector, has stopped operating this route temporarily due to the imposition of sanctions on Myanmar by the US. The airline is still flying to Bangkok as scheduled with no changes.
Please refer to your CRS systems for more details on international flight schedules. Should you wish obtain more information and latest updates on domestic flights please contact our Yangon office.
PRODUCT UPDATE
MAI CLOSES DOWN
Myanmar Airways International, which also had code share agreements with Thai Air International and Silkair, has suspended its all operations as of 11 October until further notice. According to MAI all code share flight booking will be transferred to the respective carrier partner.
TEMPLE DINNERS IN BAGAN
Following changes in the rules and regulations of the Bagan archaeological zone it is currently not possible to organise temple dinners as previously. Temple dinners cannot be arranged inside temple complexes for the time being. For all groups and passengers that have booked this service we will organise a similar dinner, in the proximity of a pagoda/temple but not inside one. At the moment we cannot confirm whether this is a temporary change in the local policy or a permanent one.
THANDE HOTEL, BAGAN
Thande Hotel in Bagan has recently increased its room capacity. Four new river view rooms, built on two floors at the bank of the Ayeryarwaddy River, have been added to the hotel’s room inventory. The rooms are quite spacious (around 38sqm), have full amenities and feature wooden finishing and furniture. They command a beautiful view of the Ayeyarwaddy River.
GOLDEN TRIANGLE TOURS
Following the recent heightened security measures in the country sightseeing excursions by boat from the Myanmar side to Thailand or Laos are no more possible for foreigners until further notice.
Therefore for itineraries with visits to all the countries in the Golden Triangle region Asian Trails will conduct Laos excursions from the Thailand side prior to entering Myanmar.
For more information please do not hesitate to contact our office.

AIRASIA GETS THE NOD TO FLY KL-S’PORE SECTOR
AirAsia will finally get the chance to operate the profitable Kuala Lumpur - Singapore route. with the Malaysian government giving it the green light to operate twice-daily flights from next year.
This development will end the duopoly on the lucrative Kuala-Lumpur-Singapore sectors, currently dominated by Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and Singapore Airlines (SIA).
MAS flies seven shuttle flights a day to Singapore while SIA has six services.
The price of a one-way ticket for the shuttle service, operated jointly by the two airlines, is RM167 while an economy non-shuttle one is RM266. Airport tax and surcharges cost RM140.
AirAsia and Tiger Airways, the latter expected to be the LCC given the rights to Kuala Lumpur, are expected to charge about 30% lower than the non-shuttle fare, but will offer the usual cheap offers for limited seats. The two low-cost carriers will operate the services from Kula Lumpur’s Low-Cost Carrier Terminal in Sepang and Singapore’s Budget Terminal at Changi Airport.

OUR RECOMMENDATION: The Paddy Museum
The Paddy Museum, located at the foot of Gunung Keriang, lies some eight kilometres from Alor Star, the capital of the north Malaysian state of Kedah. It is the first paddy museum in Malaysia, and the fourth to be opened in the world after Japan, Germany and the Philippines.
The unique architecture of the Paddy Museum represents bushels of harvested rice stalks. Rice motifs are repeated throughout the building - on staircase banisters, the museum gates and the fence surrounding it.
The museum, which consists of a main building with six surrounding annexes, is built on 12,000 square metres of land. The three-storey building sits on a vast piece of paddy field fringed with traditional Malay homes.
It showcases the paddy cultivation process in Malaysia and displays all kinds of tools and equipment, which have been used in the trade over the years. Through beautiful murals, the artwork of 60 artists from North Korea, the history of paddy cultivation in Malaysia is revealed. The largest and most impressive mural in the museum is a 360-degree realistic painting of the paddy fields and Gunung Keriang landscape. Located at the revolving gallery on the third floor of the museum the painting is eight metres high and 103 metres long.
• Opening hours: Daily from 10 am to 6 pm. Closes on Fridays from 12.30 pm to 2.30 pm.
• Admission fees: RM3 for adults, RM1 for children, RM1 per person for school groups.
