Asian Trails, jointly with “Track of the Tiger”, the non profit arm of VWB (The Voluntourists Without Borders Initiative} presents new volunteer and voluntourist options along with supporting special interest products (ecotourism, outdoor education, corporate team building and adventure racing) in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Voluntourism programmes range from half a day to six days in duration and provide the visitor with either or both environmental (nature trail development/scientific study) and capacity building (teaching English in local schools/community development work) options.
The pilot project, THE PANG SOONG NATURE TRAILS, is a CBET or community-based ecotourism product owned by the Khun Muang villagers of Ban Mae Lai, and operated under a fixed length contract by Track of the Tiger T.R.D. During the contract period VWB, with the assistance of voluntourists and volunteers, will help develop the capacity of the villagers (and their children) to manage the project for themselves and establish it as a model for others to emulate.

CHIANG MAI FLOWER FESTIVAL
Chiang Mai
1-3 February 2008

The Chiang Mai Flower Festival is similar to other flower festivals held around the world such as Taiwan's In-Season Flower Festival, Japan's Sakura Festival and the Netherlands's and Belgium's Flower Parades.
Thailand's first Flower Festival was hosted by Chiang Mai in 1977 and was such a success that it was made into an annual event. The most interesting highlight of the Flower Festival is the flower floats decorated with a beautiful array of floral species. Each flower, each petal, and each shade of colour is carefully selected and positioned on the float to form patterns, words and pictures.
Each float also conveys a unique message of its own – from Chiang Mai's rich heritage to the lifestyle of the Thai people, a religious principle/some event of Buddha's life to the past with scenes from history to a contemporary idea with abstract and modern designs.
BANGRAK’S CHINESE NEW YEAR FESTIVAL
Yaowarat, Bangkok
5-7 February 2008
Thailand's Chinese community in the Yaowarat area organises an annual fair to usher in the Chinese New Year – the “Year of the Rat”. There will be international and Chinese music, lion dances, local Chinese cultural performances, Chinese opera and fireworks, and numerous stall selling products and food such as grilled pork, Peking duck, Chinese desserts and noodles.
Thailand's Chinese population is so large that the entire city seems to shut down during Chinese New Year. During this festive season Chinatown's streets are filled with an international crowd eating their way along Yaowarat and Charon Krung Rds while watching spectacular lion dances and colourful dragon processions.
Don't miss Wat Traimit, which houses the world's largest solid gold Buddha, the crocodiles of Wat Chakrawat and Nakhon Kasem (Thieves' Market) where you can buy everything from phallus keychains to hubcaps.
BANGRAK’S VALENTINE DAY
Bangkok
14 February 2008
Bangrak means "District of Love" and on 14 February it is a magnet for amorous Thai couples even though St Valentine's Day is an imported Western concept.
Thais embrace festivals whatever their origin as long as they are sanuk (fun). Countless hotels, restaurants and nightlife venues in Bangrak will be celebrating romance with promotions and parties.
Even the local council gets in on the love theme. On this day Thailand’s highest concentration of couples register their marriages at the District Office. It's a good-natured scrum as hundreds of brides and grooms, many in elaborate costume, declare their betrothal in public. This informal spectacle is an amusing photo opportunity that the local Thai press and television do not want to miss.
UNDERWATER WEDDING CEREMONY
Trang
13-15 February 2008

Many couples from Thailand and around the world stage a special wedding ceremony on St Valentine's Day (14 February) under the crystal clear waters of Trang in South Thailand. If you're planning to wed around February, or are already married but wish to renew your wedding vows, you are eligible to participate. All taking part must be qualified divers.
Participating Thai and foreign bridegrooms and brides are warmly greeted when they arrive at Trang Airport and then go on a parade around Trang Municipality. This is followed by the colourful Khan Maak procession in long-tailed boats, which take them to Ko Kradan Island for the spectacular 40 feet-underwater ceremony.

A message from Managing Director Laurent Kuenzle
The months following September have been difficult for the Myanmar people and in particular for those making a living from the tourism industry. A lack of visitors visiting the country resulted in diminished income and made life a hardship for employees of hotels and restaurants, guides and drivers, souvenir sellers and many more. Our utmost priority has been to upkeep the tourism infrastructure as best as we could, to keep everybody employed and to help the most needy. We want to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported us in any way they could.
Time is moving on and visitors are coming back to Myanmar. While the arrivals are still below the usual visitor numbers at this time of the year we see an upward trend. We are preparing for the low season summer months and starting with activities for the 2008/09 season.
Some of you may be facing difficulties in confirming international air seats to Yangon due to the suspension of Qatar Airways flights as of 20 January 2008. We can help you in obtaining seats from Bangkok to Yangon on several airlines including Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, Air Bagan and Myanmar Airways International. We understand the difficulties in obtaining seats into Bangkok, in particular from Europe. If we can be of any help for the connecting sectors please get in touch with us.

NEW STAFF
Asian Trails Malaysia (ATMA) welcomes two new staff. Mr Muhammad Hafiz (left) joined the company as Travel Officer looking after the German Market. Apart from German he is also proficient in English and Malay and possess a basic knowledge of Italian and French.
Mr Ho Chee Yan (right) came on board as Inbound Executive last November. Despite his youth Yan, as he is fondly called, has vast experience in the tourism industry acquired from his previous working stints.
We wish Muhammad and Yan good luck in their new positions.
STAFF OUTING TO PULAU KETAM

ATMA’s management and senior staff went for an outing cum inspection trip to Pulau Ketam (Crab Island) on 20 November 2007.
The trip includes a tour of the mangrove swamp, a fish farm and a boat-building yard. We also went on a bicycle tour, which was a treat especially for those of who have not cycled for a while. It was fun, exhilarating and a great way to get around the island’s narrow streets.
Pulau Ketam is the perfect place for a day retreat as it offers a glimpse of life when it was more carefree and less complex.

THE RAFFLESIA TRAIL
ATMA recently launched a new tour – the Rafflesia Trails. On this tour guests will visit the forest surrounding the Semai Orang Asli village of Ulu Geroh, which is extremely rich in a single species of the famed Rafflesia Cantleyi, the largest flower in the world.
There are four trails leading to different sites. As conditions for a Rafflesia blooming are uncertain the well-trained Semai Orang Asli guide will decide on the trail to venture upon so as to increase the chances of seeing a full bloom Rafflesia flower.
ATMA is working in partnership with the local Orang Asli and the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) on a mission to bring greater awareness of the value and importance of forest conservation and especially of the Rafflesia.
By caring for the rainforest we will help conserve precious commodities that include clean water, undepleted soils and an entire heritage of flora and fauna. This mission will also increase awareness of how unique the Rafflesia is and understanding of the vulnerability of this amazing group of plants and of its habitat, the tropical rainforest.
ECO/SUSTAINABLE TOURS
ATMA is putting together more new nature packages including a Taman Negara (National Park) tour, which will be different from what are being offered now. Watch this space for more update.

A Personal note from Managing Director Andr? Seiler

The Asian Trails Indonesia team wishes you “Selamat Tahun Baru”, good health and a prosperous 2008.
The past year was an important one for us with generally larger numbers of tourists arriving to Bali. Compared with 2006 an increase of over 30% was reported from the authorities for 2007. Bali has received a lot attention in early December when the United Nations Climate Change Conference took place in the luxurious hotel complexes of Nusa Dua. Hotels were continuously running with very high occupancy the whole month during the conference and later the festive season. We expect the arrival numbers to grow this year as well, and are in full preparations for the coming high season.
We are very pleased to see that Bali and some other destinations in Indonesia are gaining in popularity again. We thank you for your support and look forward to another year of working with you. Terima Kasih!
NEWS UPDATE

NYEPI (SILENCE DAY) - 7 MARCH 2008
Nyepi on 7 March marks the first day of the Balinese Saka calendar and is strictly observed island-wide with a day of absolute silence and meditation, including the shut down of Bali’s airport for 24 hours.
Guests visiting Bali during this period will be able to witness Melasti or purification of the religious symbol, which is usually held three days before Nyepi. This takes place on the beach.
There will also be many Ogoh-Ogoh (papier mache monsters) carried through the town in a procession one day before Nyepi accompanied by Balinese gamelan music. As they represent the evil spirits the Ogoh-Ogoh look frighteningly ugly with fangs and bulging eyes. At night they are set on fire to free the island of the evil spirits.
Nyepi, observed from 6 am to 6 am the next morning, is a day reserved for self-reflection. Therefore, anything that might interfere with this purpose is restricted. The main restrictions are: no lighting of fires (lights must be kept low); no working; no entertainment or pleasure; no travelling; and, for some, no talking or eating.
Major hotels generally permit their guests full use of the various outlets with the understanding that they will not venture outside the property. Special arrangements are made for the hotel's staff to stay overnight at the property.
Bali's only airport will also shut down during the entire Nyepi period. All incoming and outgoing flights in Bali will be cancelled for the approximate 24-hour Nyepi interlude.
