FESTIVALS & EVENTS IN THAILAND

THE ROYAL PLOUGHING CEREMONY

 Sanam Luang, Bangkok

 9 May 2008

The Royal Ploughing Ceremony is an ancient Brahminical rite dating back to the Sukhothai Period (1257-1350 A.D.) The ceremony, which heralds the start of the new rice-growing season, is undertaken to ensure a successful planting season and an abundance of the nation's crops. Festivities are held to boost the farmers' morale, urging them to strive for an abundant harvest for local consumption as well as to ensure sufficient reserves for times of war and for export overseas.

YASOTHORN BUN BANG FAI ROCKET FESTIVAL

 Yasothorn Province

 1-31 May 2008

Born of the traditional beliefs of the Isan people the sprightly “Bun Bang Fai” Rocket Festival is the most celebrated of Isan's merit-making rituals. It has been strictly observed by the residents of Isan for generations and is essentially an annual ritual to ensure that the seasonal rains fall at the appropriate time in the planting cycle.

During the festival Buddhist merit-making traditions are also observed and reinforced. This stems from the belief that when the merit-making ceremony is held the gods and spirits will reciprocate with seasonal rain and a bountiful harvest.

Highlights of this year’s annual Bun Bang Fai celebrations include a procession of old-style rockets mounted on traditional carts, a beauty pageant, cheerleader contests and a traditional “Palaeng” I-san style set dinner.

VISAKHA BUDDHA BUCHA FESTIVAL

 Nationwide

 15-19 May 2008

Visakha Bucha Day is one of the most important days in Buddhism because of three important incidents in the life of The Buddha - his birth, his enlightenment and his passing away.

The festival miraculously falls on the same month and date every year that is on the full moon day of the sixth Lunar month. Each year Buddhists throughout the world gather to perform the worship and recollect the wisdom, purity and compassion of the Buddha.

ACTIVITIES TO BE OBSERVED:

  • Making merit by going to temples for special observances, listening to Dhamma preaching, giving donations and joining in other Buddhist activities.

  • Keeping the Five Precepts including abstinence from alcoholic drinks and all kinds of immoral acts.

  • Offering food to the monks and novices

  • Practice of renunciations: Observing the Eight Precepts, meditation and mental discipline, staying in the temple and wearing white robes (for a few days).

  • Attending the candle light procession around the Ordination Hall in the evening of the full moon day.

CAMBODIA

Happy Khmer New Year 2008!

Known as “Chaul Chnam Thmey” in the Khmer language the Cambodian New Year took place this year from 13-15 April. The three-day festivities were celebrated on a grand scale throughout the country, with religious ceremonies at shrines and temples. Cambodians shared lavish meals with friends, families and loved ones. The festival ended with a colourful fireworks display.

What’s new in the Kingdom

Cambodia to boost tourism with direct flights

Cambodia will seek to increase direct flights from China and the EU nations in its efforts to boost its booming tourism industry, which is a mainstay of Cambodia’s economy.

The country announced a 17 percent increase in tourist arrivals to about 400,000 during the first two months of this year. The EU, one of Cambodia’s target markets, is under tapped due to a lack of direct flights. Currently there are direct charter flights from Finland and Italy. However Cambodia would like to see growth from these markets to reach 60 percent of its tourist arrivals by air. And to do that the Kingdom has to put itself on the map.

Phnom Penh

Sovanna Shopping Center, largest mall opened in Phnom Penh

Sovanna Shopping Center, Cambodia's newest and largest shopping mall, opened its doors last month in Phnom Penh's Tuol Kok district and is a short walk from the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital. Standing five floors high and spanning about 50,000 square metres Sovanna is 20 percent larger then Canadia Group's first mall, the Shopping Center Sorya, which opened in December 2002.

New General Hospital in the capital

Officially inaugurated in Toul Kork on 20 March the six-storey Royal Rattanak Hospital represents a US$7.5 million investment by Bangkok Dusit Medical Services. With nine consultation intensive care unit beds and two laboratories the owners intend to provide Phnom Penh with the highest levels of pre-hospital medical emergency care and patient transport.

The Royal Rattanak is Bangkok Dusit Medical Services’ second hospital in Cambodia, having opened the Royal Angkor International Hospital in Siem Reap in January 2007. They also plan to open a 100-bed private hospital in the capital by 2009.

VIETNAM

A note from Managing Director Thuy Tien

Summer is approaching and people will start looking for places to go to for some rest and relaxation. Here are some tips for those who are looking for a peaceful beach to relax in during the Northern Hemisphere summer months. We highly recommend two well-known destinations – HOI AN and MUI NE.

Hoi An (pictured left) sits on a 40-km stretch of China Beach. Although most people know the town for its cultural heritage not many are aware of its good weather. The best weather is from June to September before the start of the rainy season and after the end of hottest months of spring.

This town has it all - whether you are looking for a relaxing beach holiday, cultural sites or a place with a lively atmosphere after dusk.

Mui Ne enjoys good weather year round with the lowest rainfall in Vietnam. Its 22-km stretch of beach and its microclimate has made it a wonderful beach destination.

A visit to the sand dunes (pictured right) is a must when you visit Mui Ne. These sand dunes protect the town from the rainy season in the south, which very light and sporadic rain from June to September.

Recommended Hotels

The Nam Hai Resort (pictured right), member of GHM, offers one- to four-bedroom villas. Facilities include a spa, gym, three different swimming pools, tennis, badminton and basketball courts and a library all within metres from the beach.

Palm Garden Resort is another five star option on the beach. Ideal for families, it is set in five hectares of garden with over 400 palm trees. It offers a full range of facilities and activities that include a swimming pool, tennis court, table tennis, billiards and snookers, tai chi, kite flying, bicycle rental and some waters sports. It also has a spa - the fabulous Qi Spa.

Victoria Hoi An Beach Resort and Spa, built in a traditional fishing village style with water ponds, small streets and clay-tiled roofs, offers rooms with traditional Vietnamese, French or Japanese decoration. There is alfresco dining right on the beach by the pool. You can also have great fun going back in time through riding in vintage sidecars (pictured left) to the nearby rice paddies and countryside.

Swiss-Belhotel Golden Sands, set in four hectares of gardens and with 400 metres of sandy beach, is another five-star option for a relaxing summer holiday. MORE BEACH DESTINATIONS:

PHU QUOC ISLAND is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful beach in Vietnam. It is also famous for its magnificent fish and seafood, as well as for its diverse fauna and flora as a large part of its territory is part of a National Park.

HO TRAM is about three-and-a-half hours drive from Ho Chi Minh City. Ho Tram Osaka, the resort managed by Life Resorts, is a good option for your clients looking for a quiet beach extension after a tour around Vietnam. The property’s remote location, idyllic garden, two swimming pools, restaurant, open air bathrooms and spa, all within walking distance from the beach, makes this the perfect getaway for a beach holiday.

NEWS IN BRIEF

CO CLY MARKET TEMPORARILY INACCESIBLE

Due to an ongoing construction project in Coc Ly the market has to be moved to a new location further up the hill. The road to the new location has not been finished and so the market is inaccessible by cars. Visitors have to walk for about 40 minutes to reach the market. The path becomes very difficult to walk when it rains.

Asian Trails suggests skipping this market for the next few months while the road construction work is going on. The road is expected to be finished in approximately six months, but this is subject to confirmation. We instead suggest a slight change in the programme, visiting the Cao Son market on Wednesdays instead o Co Cly on Tuesdays.

Apart from the Imperial treasures, which are among the most-visited tourist sites in Beijing, the art lover can also enjoy the BEIJING 798 ART ZONE, also called Dashanzi Art District. It is located within a complex, formerly known as Joint Factory 718. which was built to produce a wide variety of military and civilian equipment in the 1950s. The former factory ended its activity in the late 1980s and in 1995.

Beijing’s Central Academy of Fine Arts set up in one of the factories and was followed by many artists and designers who found space to display their work. The area now houses art galleries, publishing firms, design companies, fashion tailor shops, fancy cafes and restaurants.

Beijing 798 Art Zone is often compared with New York’s Greenwich Village or SoHo. It is located between the capital’s airport and downtown Beijing.

Yangon Airport is again open but sightseeing in Yangon is difficult this week as presently many fallen trees and billboards etc. are blocking the way. There is a shortage of water, electricity and fuel and most hotels run on in-house generators so air conditioning units are often not operating.

Asian Trails Yangon office is open but communications are difficult at the moment.

Touristic programmes in Yangon are possible but services are temporarily restricted.

Areas in Bagan, Mandalay and Inle Lake region are not affected and tours are operating normally.

For tourists arriving this week we leave them option to cancel without cancellation fees or to visit Myanmar as planned with the understanding that there will be no refunds for reduced services in Yangon due to impact of Cyclone.

We are confident that as of Monday 12 May tours to Myanmar are back to normal, making some allowances for shortcomings in transport and hotel facilities in Yangon due to aftermath of the Cyclone.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

A message from General Manager Mika Itavaara

Happy “Thingyan” New Year and year 13…?!!! May this year be a prosperous and peaceful one for all Myanmar people as well as to all our friends and colleagues abroad.

This year celebrations and pandals in Yangon were bigger than ever. Sound systems and huge stages were erected at the side of Inya Road by the Inya Lake. Tens of thousands people joined the celebrations during the five days festivities in the heart of Yangon.

A brave Asian Trails Myanmar team also entered Inya Road armoured by a truck hired for our staff for the day. Regardless of a 10-hour traffic jam every one enjoyed themselves and cool down in the heat the Myanmar summer.

Legenden Asiens VIP group from Exclusive Reisen in Shan State

We had the pleasure to host a 45-pax VIP charter group from Exclusive Reisen Swtizerland from 12-16 April. The group arrived in a private jet at Mandalay from where we transferred them to Inle Lake on a domestic charter flight.

A very special programme awaited the group at Inle Lake. There were fascinating sightseeing, special bamboo grove lunch, leg rowing competition between villagers teams (pictured above), water festival celebrations and, for the finale, a large group of local children sang and performed for the visitors.

We are very thankful for the donations and generous contributions from our clients and Exclusive Reisen, and also proud to have been able to contribute to the local school and communities through these events.

UNKNOWN MALAYSIA – ROYAL BELUM STATE PARK

The Royal Belum forest, located in Gerik, Perak (Hulu Perak), covers about 290,000 hectares and with more than 146,000 hectares of virgin forest. It is divided into two sections - the upper Belum area that stretches to the Thai-Malaysian border covering 117,500 hectares of impenetrable jungle, and the lower Belum mostly covered by the Temenggor Lake.

The Royal Belum State Park Rainforest is the “jewel in the crown” among the various tourism offerings in northern Perak. Identified as an “Environmentally Sensitive Area” under Malaysia’s National Physical Plan 2005 the BelumTemenggor complex is home to several globally threatened wildlife species, including the Sumatran rhinoceros, Malayan tiger, Asiatic elephant, Malayan tapir and the white-handed gibbon.

The park is also home to the highest concentration of hornbills in a single forest complex, with over 2,000 plain-pouched hornbills recorded in just one evening. Rafflesia cantleyi, endemic to Perak, Pahang and Terengganu, is one of the flora highlights of the park.

Watch this space as ATMA is planning an extensive reece in mid-May and new packages will be ready soon after that.

INDONESIA

LOMBOK: A personal recommendation from Managing Director Andr? Seiler

Around 40km east of Bali lies the island of Lombok, separated only by the Lombok Strait or what is also known as the Wallace line, a natural border between Oriental and Australasian fauna. Lombok is part of the Nusa Tenggara Group and is hard to compare to its popular neighbour Bali due its cultural, ethnical and religious difference. Inhabited by the indigenous Sasak people the island also is home to a Balinese minority mostly settled in the West of the island.

The massive Rinjani volcano (pictured) is one of Indonesia’s highest peaks and offers various trekking routes through unspoiled nature and with stunning views over almost the whole of Lombok. The beaches and snorkelling/diving grounds of the Gili Island group in the island’s northwest are remarkable, the surfing spots in the South popular and the scenery along the coastline simply splendid.

Lombok has not as many accommodation facilities as its Western neighbour but offers some nice boutique style hotels in quiet location and also some luxurious five star properties. All in all Lombok is an ideal destination for tourists who want to avoid traffic jams or overcrowded beaches, and for those

looking for a couple relaxing days after a roundtrip.

Apart from the existing modern speedboat services of the Gili Cat or Blue Water Express to the Gili Islands and Lombok, Bounty Cruises has recently announced it would restart ferry services and would launch its services to Lombok as per this year (see article on “Bounty Cruises” below).

Silk Air operates three weekly services from Singapore to Mataram. More flights expected once the new International Airport located in the South of the island will open.

On this day a Dalang (puppeteer) will remove all his puppets from storage, on average 100 of them and set them all up to receive the offerings. It is considered very unlucky if a baby is born on this date and, if such an event occurred, a special ceremony has to be performed in order to purify the child and protect it from harm.
