From the CEO’s desk

Dear Friends,

MAY has been a disastrous month for the peoples of Myanmar and China as both countries were devastated by Cyclone Nargis and the Sichuan earthquake respectively.

As these are two of Asian Trails’ main destinations we have taken measures to ensure that the welfare of our staff and their families, including all guides and drivers, in both these countries are taken care of.

We have received generous donations from Kuoni as well as from Asian Trails managers and staff to help those in the affected areas. We want to take this opportunity to thank them for their kind assistance in helping the affected people to start rebuilding their homes and their lives.

We are happy to say that life is returning to near normality in both Myanmar and China, and our tours there have resumed. However, people there still need help as many are still homeless and, in some areas, there is not enough clean water and little food.

The best way that you and your clients can help our staff and managers in Myanmar and China is to NOW promote tours to these two destinations in order to enable us to secure their jobs in the long term. We look forward then to seeing more bookings from you for these destinations in need – Thank you!

HAPPY TRAILS!

A note from Group Managing Director Laurent Kuenzle

I would like to take the opportunity of our July newsletter to thank all friends and colleagues for their kind messages of encouragement after the difficulties Burma is facing since Cyclone Nargis struck on May 3. Let me remind you that none of the tourist areas in the country were affected by the cyclone and travel is possible to all sights including Golden Rock, Bagan, Mandalay and the Inle Lake region. Thank you for your help in brining tourists back to Burma as quickly as possible. We need to kick start the tourism industry once again. For many Burmese income from tourism is   the only income they have.

In my capacity as group managing director of Asian Trails I am here to help you achieve your goals at our destinations. Do not hesitate to write to my personal email addresses kuenzle@asiantrails.org or lolokue@yahoo.com for any assistance you require.

Happy Trails !

FESTIVALS & EVENTS

  PHI TA KHON FESTIVAL 2008

Dan Sai District, Loei District and Province

4-6 July 2008

The Phi Ta Khon festival is unique to the Dan Sai district in Loei Province and reflects the local Isan belief in ghosts and spirits. Held once a year, it is part of a grand merit-making festival known as the "Boon Luang" festival.

The origins of the Phi Ta Khon Festival can be found in the tale of Lord Buddha's last great incarnation before attaining Enlightenment. According to Buddhist accounts it is said that when Prince Vessandara, the Buddha's penultimate incarnation, returned to his city it was such a joyous occasion that the village spirits came forth to join the welcoming parade. This very colourful and vibrant Phi Ta Khon procession is the central focus of the celebrations.

In a lively re-enactment of the tale the young men of the community dress up as "spirits" wearing long trailing costumes made from colorful strips of cloth sewn together.

TAK BAT DOK MAI FESTIVAL

Wat Phra Phutthabat Ratchaworamahawihan, Amphoe Phra Phutthabat, Saraburi

16-18 July 2008

The Tak Bat Dok Mai floral offering merit-making ritual is unique to Saraburi province. This ritual stands out from the merit-making activities conducted in the other parts of Thailand. This is because, in addition to the offerings of cooked rice, food, incense, candles and other conventional sacred items, the Tak Bat Dok Mai ritual includes offerings of Dok Khao Phansa flowers that only come into bloom during the Buddhist Lent, hence the origin of its name. Some villagers call the flower Dok Yung Thong (golden peacock) or Dok Hong Thong (golden swan flower).

NORTH LAOS INSPECTION TRIP

With a few staff from the Vientiane office we went on a very interesting inspection trip to North Laos in late May. Our trip starts from Vientiane, then Xieng Khouang via Vang Vieng, continuing to Sam Neua, Viengxay and all the way to the Vietnamese border at Na Meo for the first leg. We had a chance to see the Plain of Jars, Tham Piu Cave and the famous Viengxay Pathet Lao Caves.

Heading west towards Nong Khiaw, visiting the Saun Hin site and its Menhirs on the way, our trip took us to Oudomxay and Muang La. After a short stop at the Chinese border at Boten, with its new “Las Vegas style” big hotel and casino, we finally arrived at Luang Namtha.

Then it’s back to the south via Pakbeng and on to Luang Prabang by boat.  We had the privilege to visit the World Heritage City and inspect some new properties, before returning to Vientiane on the spectacular Road 13.

The trip covers a total of 2,500 kilometres on mostly good roads (except for two portions between Oudomxay and Luang Namtha). Along the way we discovered the beautiful and various landscapes of mountainous North Laos, with green as the dominant colour due to the start of the rainy season, which did not bother us too much. Thanks to the very comfortable Asian Trails VIP minibus (pictured left) we had some safe driving and did not suffer any back pain from the long trip!

Discover the beautiful nature of North Laos with your own customised itinerary.

  • River Side in Nong Khiaw

Annual Staff Excursion to Mondulkiri

This year’s fam trip took us far away from civilisation towards the north-east of Cambodia – to the hilly province of Mondulkiri nestled against the border with Vietnam and home to several hill tribes.

Apart from exploring the province’s rich culture, encountering wonderful people and experiencing breathtaking scenery with thickly forested hills and powerful waterfalls this trip had also another objective - a weekend full of teambuilding activities for ATC. Each team had to answer questions, write poems, perform an ATC song, draw “Mondulkiri in five years from now” and, of course, compete against each other in funny outdoor games. The honouring ceremony, when each team had to present its results, was not only great fun but also revealed some real talents.

   VIETNAM

A personal note from Managing Director Thuy Tien

If we focused on fantastic beach destinations for the summer on our last issue of the Trailblazer, this time we would like to put the stress on the beautiful area of the Northern Province of Ha Giang.

There are still places in Vietnam where one can feel that “I am the first tourist they see here”. It might not be true but the sensation is rewarding.

Ha Giang Province is said to be the nicest in Vietnam. Being the nicest undoubtedly comes hand in hand with not being developed yet.  Finding four- or five-star hotels or Michelin awarded restaurants is mission impossible.  Instead tourists will more likely stay in small local hotels with commodities like air-conditioning and hot water.

But one does not go to Ha Giang to enjoy the luxury of man-built projects; one goes to Ha Giang to enjoy the luxury of being 100% surrounded by nature. The roads are winding and the valleys deep. You can feel you are on the top of the world and discover you can still go higher, and you can come to a minority village atthe foot of the mountain and discover you can still descend lower in the valley. No matter where you are the landscape is astonishing and you will go open-mouthed after every turn of the road. In Ha Giang Province people can get the feelings reversed, feel you are the attraction of the place and not the tourist who comes and sees.

Lush mountains, green valleys, tea plantations, rice paddies on the slopes of the mountains or bright yellow corn on the cob drying on the side of the road - vegetation is to be found everywhere. Add trekking trails and minority villages and you will get a full picture of what Ha Giang Province has to offer.

DONG HOI INSPECTION

Some members of the Danang branch went on inspection of the Dong Hoi area in central Vietnam. Among other interesting things, like beautiful scenery and visit to some minority tribes, they experienced the less visited of the five UNESCO world heritage sites in Vietnam - the caves of Phong Nha. One visits the water caves by boat.

Very adventurous people will reach the dry caves after a walk of nearly 600 steps to reach a beautiful landscape of mountain and river. The accommodation is basic but offers amazing views on the Nhatle River and well situated on the heart of the city.

Dong Hoi City is still a very small and undeveloped city, which is used so far as a stopover.

NEW FUEL SURCHARGE FROM 1 JULY 2008

Due to the continuing increase in the price of jet fuel Bangkok Airways and Siem Reap Airways International have announced a new fuel surcharge starting from 1 July (based on ticket’s issuing date).

Vietnam Airlines has also raised its fuel surcharge. It released an official announcement on 1 July that, with immediate effect, it would apply a fuel and insurance surcharge on all international flights. The surcharge will vary depending on the destinations and will represent an increase of between USD15 and USD40 dollars per international sector/per ticket.

Other airlines taking the same measure include United Airlines, Viva Macau, Qatar Airways, Thai Airways, Malaysia Airlines and Garuda Indonesia.

We expect this to become a regular practice from the airlines if the oil price keeps increasing and ask for understanding in case we need to apply any revision.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM ATMA

A CAVING EXPERIENCE

Gua Kandu, located at Gopeng, is a large multi-level cave with several entrances. It is a 30-minute drive south of Ipoh and is accessible via the North-South Highway (PLUS) at the Gopeng exit.

Like many caves in the Kinta Valley Gua Kandu was a Communists hideout until the 1960s. Old Communist graffiti can still be found on the walls of the cave. It boasts numerous interesting karst formations including magnificent columns, stalactites, stalagmites and garfu. At approximately 11 o’clock a ray of light illuminates the main chamber through a natural skylight in the cave.

Exploration is relatively easy and technical climbing skills are not required. However access to the “Crystal Chamber” involves a 10-foot drop down a narrow tunnel and may prove to be challenging for most. It is also multi level and multi chamber and with different degree of difficulty depending on the route, makes Gua Kandu one of the all-time favourites among cavers.

The Malaysian Karst Society describes Gua Kandu as one of the most exciting cave known to the society.

   INDONESIA

A personal note from Managing Director Andr? Seiler

TANAH TORAJA - Meet the ancestors!

The Torajans or “people of the uplands” live in a remote and mountainous area of South Sulawesi. Most of the 650,000 inhabitants are Christians, but many follow animist beliefs.  The very expensive funeral rites still play an important role in the society and the richer the individual is, the more buffalos or pigs are sacrificed at the death feast. Family graves typical for a Torajan village are the boat-shaped roofs on houses on wooden piles. The outside is richly decorated with wood carving symbolising different motifs, which display their ancestors’ history as there is no form of writing, only a spoken language.

The region had its peak in tourism arrivals in the 1990s and was less frequently visited after the tumults in Central Sulawesi at the beginning of this century. This is now in the past and Tanah Toraja remains of the most fascinating destinations in the archipelago due to its rich cultural heritage and beauty.

Garuda Indonesia offers daily flights from Jakarta or Denpasar to Makassar on the southern tip of Sulawesi. From there a nicely paved road leads from the coastal lowlands to the mountains of Tanah Toraja. The journey along the coast and up to Rantepao takes up to 8 hours, but the beautiful scenery of Sulawesi compensates for the long drive.

Please contact us on info@asiantrailsbali.com for more information about Sulawesi.
