ANY OTHER NEWS

On Saturday 11th October, the Asian Trails team converged just before midnight to take part in the charity Midnight Run, arranged by Amari Hotels and BMW Thailand.

It is the only race in Bangkok to be held at Midnight, and offers competitors a choice of 2 distances – 6km or 12km. The city streets are closed to traffic and protected by a police and security contingent of about 400 officers, and supported along the route by local residents and shop owners, together with the management and staff of the Amari Watergate Hotel. The atmosphere is tremendous, with around 4,000 runners, both local and foreign.

All proceeds from the event go to charitable causes, firstly the ‘Chalerm Prakiat HRH Princess Sirindhorn School’ which supports the education of children whose parents have very tragically passed away due to HIV infection and the second beneficiary is the Baan Gerda Children's Project, which supports HIV-infected orphans in Nongmuang, Lopburi province.

Only two staff members took the 12km challenge, Jamie Crisp and Andre Van Der Marck, who completed the route in approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes.   Pictures are the Asian Trails runners.

FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

NOVEMBER 2008

LOI KRATHONG – FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

In Bangkok: November 8 - 12, 2008

Nationwide: November 12, 2008

As the full moon of the twelfth lunar month (usually in mid-November) lights up the night sky, throughout the Thai kingdom, hundreds and thousands of ornately-

decorated krathong or traditional banana leaf floats are set adrift in rivers and waterways in a spell-binding ritual called "Loi Krathong" - the 'festival of lights". This is one of the Kingdom's oldest and best-preserved traditions. The Loi Krathong tradition we know of today has evolved from the royal rituals of the early Rattanakosin period in which several types of lanterns were set afloat in the Chao Phraya River and its waterways.

Loi Krathong Sai on the Ping River

Night of A Thousand Floating Lanterns

In Tak province, the banana-leaf floats are replaced by coconut shells which are threaded together and launched simultaneously so they appear as long chains of hundreds of glittering lights on the Ping River, hence the origin of its name, "Loi Krathong Sai".

Yi-Peng Festival in Northern Thailand

In the Northern Thai provinces that were once part of the ancient Lanna Thai kingdom, the Yi-peng Northern Lantern Festival is still being celebrated. Tubular lanterns, resembling hot air balloons, are lit and released into the night sky as an offering to the Lord Buddha. As hundreds of illuminated lanterns drift into infinity, this conjures the same sense of wistful closure as the krathongs float downstream.

AYUTTHAYA WORLD HERITAGE SITE CELEBRATIONS

Venue: The Ayutthaya Historical Park, Ayutthaya

Formally known as Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, the ancient city of Ayutthaya, was founded in 1350 by King U-Thong and remained the capital city of the Kingdom of Siam for 417 years, from 1350 to 1767.

During this time, 33 kings of various Siamese dynasties reigned in Ayutthaya, each contributing to the the Kingdom's many cultural treasures. However it was during the reign of His Majesty King Narai the Great that the Kingdom of Siam established international diplomatic and trade ties with many western countries such as France, Holland, Portugal and Spain.

During its heyday, international trade flourished with Dutch, Portuguese, French, English, Chinese and Japanese sea-faring traders sailing up the Chao Phraya River, the River Of Kings, to this ancient capital. Ayutthaya was one of Asia's most prosperous cities with a proliferation of magnificent temples, palaces and pavillions signifying its wealth and properity.  With a culture and civilisation so outstanding and timeless, Ayutthaya was designated a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site on 13 December 1991.  Each year, Ayutthaya celebrates its glorious past with displays of traditional culture and lifestyle, numerous forms of entertainment amid the ruins of this ancient city.

Enrich your day at Sambor Prei Kuk

The Hindu temple complex of Sambor Prei Kuk was established in the early 6th century AD and includes an area of nearly 1000 acres enclosed by double walls, and over 150 temples and towers; its construction predates Ankgor Wat by several centuries. If you plan a visit to this spectacular site between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap there is more to do than just visiting the temples on foot. Why not try a bicycle ride through the huge complex, enjoying beautiful nature and historic culture at the same time. An ox cart ride might be also a novel change to go from one temple to another. Instead of having lunch in the provincial capital Kampong Thom we can now provide an original picnic lunch on the site under shady palm huts prepared by local villagers. On your way back to the National Road you can stop at a weaving village and find out more about the traditional art of producing silk kramas. Alternatively, you may decide to make a quick visit at a monastery watching the monks in their daily life. Sambor Prei Kuk has more to offer than just temple visits!

The Olympics are  over  and  the month of October has brought many travellers to China and the capital city. This is one of the best times to visit China, during the golden autumn. The Great Wall area offers a landscape full of autumn colors and the yellow tiles of the roofs of the Forbidden City shine in the sun. These are just two of the spectacular reasons for visiting China at this time of the year.

ASIAN TRAILS PRODUCT UPDATE

After the Olympics, it’s time to explore and discover new hidden treasures of China.  Here is a selection of some of the sites our Product Development team came across in the last few months:

1. Southern Shanxi – Yuncheng

Looking for an authentic experience beyond the big cities? Come and discover the Underground Dwellings and the incredible Murals of the Yongle Palace (Unesco World Heritage) near Yuncheng, in the southern part of Shanxi Province.  These sites can be inserted between a visit to the ancient town of Pingyao and the old capital Xian.  All linked by modern expressways!

2. Sichuan - The Fengshui Town of Langzhong

Wish to go off the beaten track and discover an old town renowned for its perfect Feng Shui? This old town is best reached by road from Chongqing, and is well worth a visit.  Some of the old courtyard houses and watchtowers have been well preserved and a portion of this picturesque place is now under state protection.   The Fengshui Museum is unique in its concept and very educational, you may wish to rearrange your house and office after your visit!

3. Chongqing - Zhongshan Town

If you wish to go back in time, just drive a few hours away from bustling Chongqing, and discover the old village of Zhongshan.  Located on the banks of a small river, Zhongshan is a traditional old town with houses partly built on stilts.  Ideal for a soft adventure before embarking on a cruise on the Yangtze River !

 MYANMAR

A note from Managing Director Thomas Carnevale

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The past two months have proved more positive for tourism in Myanmar.

Visitors are now starting to come back to the country and this helping greatly to lift the morale of all people working in the tourism sector as well as the population more at large. The climate at present is getting better and the days are getting cooler as the monsoon rains have now ceased. An excellent time indeed to come to Myanmar!

You will read in our newsletter about the new opening of the Mrauk Oo Princess Hotel, in Rakhine State at the end of November. I can personally warmly recommend a visit to the region, still very much unexplored and pretty much untouched. The area around Mrauk Oo is beautiful and interesting both under a natural point of view as well as a cultural one.

Together with my colleagues from other Asian Trails countries I will be present at WTM in London this November at our Asian Trails stand. I am looking forward to meeting you there to introduce myself personally.

It is with great pleasure that I take this chance to personally thank our Mandalay Station Manager, Mr. U Tin Aung Mynt (Ronald) for his work and commitment in helping to clean up and educate the people of Mingun, an historical city near Mandalay, in the correct way of how to dispose of their rubbish. I hope the example set by Ronald will be followed all around Myanmar so that local people can also be educated to the importance of keeping their villages and places clean.

Last but not least I would also take the opportunity to personally thank my colleague Mrs. Nwe Nwe Htay, who, as you will read below, will leave Asian Trails after nine years. I wish her all the best for her new job and a prosperous future!

Best regards,

Thomas Carnevale
