BANGRAK’S VALENTINE DAY

Bangkok, Thailand

Bangrak means "District of Love", and on February 14 it's a magnet for amorous Thai couples, even if St. Valentine's Day is an imported Western concept. Thais embrace festivals whatever their origin as long as they are sanuk (fun). So, countless hotels, restaurants and nightlife venues in Bangrak will be celebrating romance with promotions and parties, and even the local council gets in on the love theme. On this day, the country's highest concentrations of couples register their marriages at the District Office. It's a good-natured scrum as hundreds of brides and grooms, many in elaborate costume, declare their betrothal in public. This informal spectacle is an amusing photo opportunity never missed by the local Thai press and television.

February 13-15, 2009

Participating Thai and foreign bridegrooms and brides are warmly greeted when they arrive at Trang Airport, from where they parade around Trang Municipality. The colourful Khan Maak procession in long-tailed boats takes them to Ko Kradan island for their spectacular 40-feet-underwater ceremony.

 LAOS

A note from Managing Director Philippe Conod

The time has come for us to take a short look into the recent past, learn from the lessons and turn focus towards 2009.

Even though the future might look uncertain and that more difficult times may possibly be ahead for us, Laos looks at the coming Year 2009 with confidence. Thanks to the stable political situation, to a friendly and welcoming population, the country has benefited a continuous increase in the tourism industry for the last few years. Naturally Laos will not escape completely the side effects of the world financial difficulties and the recent Bangkok events, but the eventual stabilisation of arrivals allow us to concentrate on quality of services and accommodation.

The year 2008 has been a good one and, as a very trendy and popular destination, Laos has fulfilled every visitor's expectations.

We look forward to taking care of all of your guests and make sure to give them the best welcome possible.

Welcome to Laos, happy sales and warm greetings from Vientiane

 VIETNAM

A note from General Manager Claudio Kellenberger

Viet Nam will be waving ‘good-bye’ and welcoming two different years within 30 days. 2008 will open the doors to 2009 on the 1st of January and the Lunar Year of the Rat will come to and end to receive the year of the Water Buffalo on 26 January. Here are some facts that will help you understand the meaning of the Lunar New Year, the traditions and the celebrations.  Tet Nguyen Dan, or the Festival of the first day, announces the beginning of the Lunar New Year. Whole clans reunite together to close loose ends and start the New Year fresh from scratch: debts have to be paid and everything else has to be cleaned before the changing of one year as a sign of good luck for the year to come. At midnight on New Year's Day problems are left behind and joy invades every one.
Seven days before the New Year's Day the three Spirits from the hearth go on a trip to the heaves riding fishes. Their mission is to inform the Jade Emperor about the events of the past year. Before the departure of the gods to the heavens Vietnamese people release fishes and make offerings in altars in the hope of receiving favourable reports and ensuring good fortune for the coming year. Making heavy noise to receive the commencement of the New Year is a sign of welcoming the spirits from the hearth on their way back from their trip and scaring bad spirits from approaching families.
Similarly to the Christian tradition, Vietnamese also decorate their houses with trees during these holidays; offer gifts to children (red envelopes with lucky money) and give special importance to the food.
There are some don’ts for the TET holidays: being rude, showing anger, wearing white, sweeping, sewing or being the first visitor to enter the house if you are a single middle-aged woman, if you lost your job recently or you had an accident in the past twelve months are all signs of misfortune. In general, Tet celebrations are quiet and are considered family times.
Whether you are in Viet Nam or far away from here at the end of January: Chuc Mung Nam Moi to you!!

The Vietnamese Lunar New Year will be held on the 26 January 2009 and the days prior and following will surely be affected by this holiday, the most important holiday of the year for Vietnamese.

Although TET is synonymous for celebrations for the locals, most of these happen indoors with families and it is sometimes not easy to feel the atmosphere in the streets. This is the information we could gather from our suppliers, we would recommend to use it as a guideline although may be subject to change.

most of the local restaurants will be closed from the 25th to the 28th January with few exceptions closing even longer.
Cao Dai Temple in Tay Nhin will be closed from the 19th to the 27th and will reopen again on the 28th. In the Mekong Delta area, major tourist attractions will be closed from the 20th Jan to the 3rd Feb and Cai Be and Cai Rang floating markets will not take place between the 25th – 31st January.

 MYANMAR

A note from Managing Director Thomas Carnevale

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

A new year has arrived and an old one is already becoming a part of history!

As you all know 2008 has been one of Myanmar's toughest years in a long time, for its people in particular and also for its tourism industry. We would like to thank you very much for all your enormous and continuous support in the last couple of months.

Here at Asian Trails Myanmar we are now all looking forward to 2009, certain that the New Year will be luckier than the past one.

I am also happy to announce that for the upcoming year we are offering an exclusive and very much off the beaten track tour leaving from Mandalay to see the endangered and rare Irrawaddy Dolphin. These creatures live in the Irrawaddy River and are currently at risk of extinction. We are working in conjunction with the local Dolphin Sanctuary that was created last year. For more details please see below.

I wish to congratulate and thank personally our Shan State Station Manager and all his team for his help and commitment he showed in helping locals cleaning up the area around Inn Thein Pagoda on Inle Lake.

The whole Asian Trails Myanmar team wishes you all a good and prosperous new year and we hope to see many of your clients in Myanmar in 2009!

Best regards,

Thomas Carnevale

CHINDWIN RIVER CRUISE 2009

Both Ayravata Cruises and IFC Pandaw have announced their schedules for their upcoming Chindwin River Cruises September 2009. Places are still available for these much sought after 10 day long cruises that sail on one of Asia's last unknown Rivers, the mighty Chindwin. This river flows all the way from Northern Myanmar, not far the Indian border, into the Irrawaddy, which it meets not far upstream from Bagan. In fact the Chindwin is the Irrawaddy's main tributary.

These cruises are a real experience and take their passengers in very much, off the beaten track through parts of the country that are yet to be discovered by international tourists. Cruises only run during the end of August and September as this is the only time of the year when there is enough water in the river for the boat to sail smoothly. Cruises on the Chindwin can easily be combined to a general tour of Myanmar, taking in other destinations and sights.

EXPERIMENTAL MOBILE PHONE SIM CARD LAUNCHED

As of December 2008 Myanmar's authorities have launched an experimental SIM mobile phone card service for tourists. These SIM cards are currently available for purchase and come in values of 10, 20 and 50 USD. These SIM cards are only valid for a limited time after being sold, ranging from two weeks to one month. Clients can bring their own mobile phone and then fit it with this SIM card for the duration of the stay. Our guides in Yangon can assist guests with purchasing the cards.

Please kindly note though that since this is still in the experimental stage we cannot guarantee a flawless service. Prices are subject to change and mobile phone coverage outside of the main cities leaves much to be desired.

ASIAN TRAILS PRODUCT UPDATE

A new Dolphin Watching excursion from Mandalay shall now be offered by Asian Trails Myanmar starting from January 2009.

These excursions are designed for guests interested in wildlife and our objective is to conduct these excursions without disturbing the dolphins, in the most respectful and least intrusive way possible. The Irrawaddy Dolphin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irrawaddy_Dolphin) is currently under threat of extinction and the Myanmar government has opened, in 2007, a dolphin sanctuary stretching the Irrawaddy river north from Mandalay. Unique to these dolphins living in this area is the way in which the dolphins collaborate with fishermen in catching fish. On this tour there will be a possibility to see first hand this unique behaviour. The dolphin can be seen collaborating with fishermen from Mid October until Mid March, when the Irrawaddy level is low enough. 1 day, 2 day and 3 day longer excursions are available, departing from Mandalay everyday. For more information as well as price details please contact us.

ANY OTHER NEWS

As advised in our previous newsletter, Asian Trails is now helping to clean areas around major tourist sites in Myanmar.

Our Shan State Station Manager, Mr. Nyo Tun (better known as Mr. Brown), with the help of his staff as well as our local suppliers and friends donated various wooden garbage bin to the Inn Thein Pagoda Complex.

Mr. Brown explained how to use the bins and also taught the local people on the importance of keeping the area clean of rubbish, especially plastic. Experts from the local Bio Taunggyi (Shan State's capital) also came along and explained to the local community how to produce bio fertilizer from recycled garbage.

After the success of Mingun's clean up last September Asian Trails will try to expand these initiatives to try to educate the local inhabitants in keeping tourist sites free from excessive rubbish.

ITALIAN & ASIAN CREATIONS IN A 101 YEAR OLD BUILDING

In a concrete jungle like Kuala Lumpur, a place to dine where time has stood still over the decades is increasingly hard to come across.

A charming place near the Bank Rakyat in the city centre is the Yourcheff.com Restaurant, operating from a 101-year-old building with neo-classical appeal.

The stately mansion was built in 1907 by tin tycoon Loke Chow Kit. Over the years, it housed British officers, who enjoyed their evenings at the Royal Selangor Club and was turned into the Heritage Hotel and Hotel Peninsula.

With the advantage of several wings, the mansion with a beautiful courtyard and enchanting garden now houses Yourcheff.com, the art gallery Galeri Tangsi and the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM).

The halal restaurant serves Italian and Asian cuisine but its best draw is the set lunch.

Diners can enjoy soup or salad, any main course from the Italian menu and iced or hot tea. It allows you to create your own set with maybe Spaghetti Aglio Olio or Lamb Shank.

To enjoy the best of both menus, here are some recommendations, Seafood Tomyam, Fettucine Salmon, Nasi Pattaya and Tiramisu. Another combination could be Fish Ball Soup, Pizza Pollo, Mamak Mee Goreng and Ayam Masak Merah.

The Italian food is prepared by Kulasic and the Asian favourites are cooked by a chef formerly with the Royal Selangor Club.

TAMARIND HILL RE-OPENS

Having long been a popular choice of many of KL's elegant cognoscenti, the Tamarind brand has garnered numerous awards and praise for the consistency of quality and brand image it has persisted throughout the years.

 INDONESIA

A note from Managing Director Andr? Seiler

Dear friends & partners,

The success of the 'Visit Indonesia Year 2008' campaign has made the government’s decision, an easy to extend into 2009 as well, so if you have missed out on visiting us this year, then you still have a chance to do so next year. Although the target of arriving visitors was not reached, 2008 still sets a record year in Indonesia's tourism in term of arrivals and revenue. Despites the global economical slowdown and the upcoming legislative and presidential elections, the World Tourism Organization still sees a growth in the tourism sector for Indonesia in 2009, but of course not as significant as this year. This gives us confidence to start the New Year, even though the global crisis has taken its toll for Indonesia as well.

We will be happy to welcome you in 2009 and we would like to thank you for your continuous support.

Your Asian Trails Indonesia Team
