FROM THE CEO'S DESK

Dear Friends,

It's that time of the year when many of our destinations continue to enlighten us with many colourful and extraordinary festivals. It's a great time of the year to be a part of different cultures and festivities. Spring starts to change to Summer and as some of our destinations start to warm up, others start receive some refreshing afternoon showers, helping to bring the thermometer back down a degree or two.

Thailand has received bad press recently with the current policital situation and clashes over the Thai New Year holidays. The safety and well being of our clients is our number one priority here at Asian Trails. Bangkok is a sprawling city of over 1500 square kilometres and these isolated rallies were in areas predominately around the government buildings, away from the main tourist destinations. Order was restored and the rallies dispersed in two days and now, we are very happy to inform you that life is back to normal. Many hotels have started to offer excellent rates and incentive packages to underline the message that we are ready to welcome your guests back to the Kingdom. For something different, why not check out our lifestyle tours?

With that, I invite you to read on and hear what's new around the region.

HAPPY TRAILS!

Luzi A. Matzig

BUN BANG FAI ROCKET FESTIVAL

Yasothon Municipal Office on Chaeng Sanit Road and Yasothon Provincial Office

Born of the traditional beliefs of the Isan people, the sprightly "Bun Bang Fai" Rocket Festival, the most celebrated of Isan's merit-making rituals, has been strictly observed by the residents of Isan for generations and is essentially an annual ritual to ensure that the seasonal rains fall at the appropriate time in the planting cycle. In this process, Buddhist merit-making traditions are also observed and reinforced.

Highlights of the annual Bun Bang Fai celebrations being held this year include a procession of old-style rockets mounted on traditional carts, a beauty pageant, cheerleader contests, and a traditional 'Palaeng' I-san style set dinner.

The Rocket Festival stems from the belief that when this merit-making ceremony is held, gods and spirits will reciprocate with seasonal rain and a bountiful harvest.

We all know that summer season in Europe and the Americas, as well as in the Northern hemisphere, gets really busy. Prices increase suddenly and unexpectedly. Hotels and resorts in the most popular summer destinations get overcrowded and it is sometimes quite difficult to find a quiet spot on the beach. Ever consider a different experience this summer? Vietnam is your answer. The long time sleeping Buffalo is ready to welcome you to a different and unforgettable experience. The major destinations in the country are much more accessible and less crowded with tourists and visitors. Do not forget the favourable exchange rates most of the major currencies currently enjoy. It is definitely good value for money to Visit the wonders of Vietnam at even lower prices.

“This part of Vietnam was crying for a top end property, the likes of which you rarely encounter between here and Bali,” said Jean-Philippe Begin, the resort’s general manager. “Now, the crying is over.”

Named after a 13th Century Vietnamese princess, the Princess d’Annam opens with 57 units on a secluded bay 35 kilometres south of the provincial capital of Phan Thiet.

The property’s beach takes in a private bay that’s defined by an 1899-built colonial French lighthouse to the north and a massive ridge of sand that curls out to sea to the south.

However naturally impressive the surroundings, the resort has a landmark tropical design, crafted by noted Singaporean architect Tan Hock Beng. The resort is a testament to the architect’s craft of critical regionalism whereby ‘place’ matters.

The all-villa resort trades in three classes of accommodation, from the 75-square-meter Mandarin villa to the 100-square-meter Princess and the 185-square-meter, two-story Empress.

The spa itself is a 1,800-square-meter monument of design, reminiscent of a Moroccan sanctuary. The pre-eminence of the spa is underscored by its situation on the property itself. Where other resorts bury their spas in an out-of-the-way location, Princess d’Annam positioned its spa on the sea.

“It’s the best seat in the house,” said Begin. “Usually, the visual experience of any spa treatment is negligible. Here it’s overwhelming.”

The gardens are designed by Alan Carle, who also designed the ginger gardens in Singapore’s Botanical Garden. The grounds teem with more than 200 varieties of flowers, shrubs and trees. In the heart of the resort is a ginger garden, a subtle echo of Carle’s renowned design further south.

In addition to the private pools featured in the Princess and Empress villas, four common pools enhance the resort’s oasis-like appeal. The emphasis on water is apropos: the Princess d’Annam is located in the most dependably sunny region in Vietnam.

JUST A TOUCH OF HISTORY

Water puppetry, has been a part of the Vietnamese consciousness for centuries. Then, as now, the shows recounts tales of ancient folklore, as well as daily life in the fields.

The idea is said to have been inspired by the annual flooding of the Hong(red)River delta, when religious statues floating out of the temples gave villagers the idea of creating a new form of entertainment during the wet season. Villagers would gather for shows during special festivals or after the harvest in provinces around Ha Noi

There is evidence from the last three Centuries that shows of water puppetry were performed in Thuy Dinh, a two storey Village hall where the top floor was used for worship, and the lower floor for performances.

Water puppetry reached its peak during the LY Dynasty (1009-1225),when a show was performed for royalty in 1121 to honour King Ly Nhan Tong(1066-1227)

FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL : it falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, this year on the 28th of May. On that day, every family eats Zongzi (glutinous rice wrapped in reed leaves). Why do people eat Zongzi? It is said to be done in memory of Qu Yuan, a high-ranking official of the State of Chu during the Warring States period (475-221B.C.) who made great contributions to the state. Wrongly accused of corruption, he was removed from office by the Duke and being banished, led a poor and wandering life. Overwhelmed with sadness, he drowned himself in the Miluo River on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. The people of the State of Chu recognized his contribution and as a mark of respect threw rice into the river as a sacrifice to him. Later they were afraid that the fish and shrimps would eat the rice thrown into the river, so they wrapped the food in reed leaves and bound silk threads around the packets before dropping them into the river.

This custom thus continues until today during the Dragon boat festival, a long weekend in China from May 28th to 30th, work will resume on Sunday 31st.

ASIAN TRAILS PRODUCT UPDATE

SICHUAN PROVINCE :

It stands in the southwest part of China and is known as a Land of abundance. Everyone has heard of this province a year ago when the earthquake hit the area on the 12th of May. The sites mentioned below were not affected by the earthquake.

The capital city, Chengdu, lies in the Red basin. It is a city of 11 millions people which has developed a lot the past few years.

The Panda Bear has long been associated with China and one of the highlights of Chengdu sightseeing is the visit of the Panda Breeding Research Institute, located in the northern suburbs of the city. It is nestled in a park in the middle of a bamboo forest (see : http://w315619.s156.ufhost.com/VIDEO_PANDA.MOV)

It is said that best time to visit is in the morning between 8.30 and 10am during feeding time. Outside these hours it’s likely the bears will be indulging in their favourite pastime, sleeping!

Another highlight of the city is the Jin Sha Museum: in February 2001, construction workers, when digging a ditch for sewage system, excavated a large number of white bone-like objects, stone figures, bronze wares and gold ornaments. They had found an archaeological site dating from the Shang (1600-1046BC) and Zhou (1046-256BC) dynasties. The most famous pieces are the sun-and-bird Gold Foil, the Gold Mask and the Standing Bronze Figure. All objects are displayed very smartly with English comments. The construction of the Museum started in 2005 and completed by the end of 2006.

To complete your day in Chengdu, take your time and stroll in the newly renovated areas of Kuan Zhai Lane, Wenshu Fang around Wen shu Temple and Jin Li near Wuhou Temple. Tea houses welcome local people in the afternoon to sip tea when playing mah jong or cards, a very authentic experience.

From Chengdu, it is worth to spend a 2 days-1 night visit to Emei Mountain and Leshan.

Emei mountain, one of the Four Sacred Mountains in China, is situated at 180km from Chengdu and stands at 3000m altitude It is not always bright sunshine on top of Emei Mountain and the Management of Asian Trails China (Veronique Ducassy, Managing Director and Kris Van Goethem, General Manager) experienced a foggy day on Easter Day. At the foot of the mountain, a local five star hotel, Hongzhushan, allows the traveller to spend the night in a comfortable place. No worry, there is a road and a cable car ride to reach the summit.

From Emei back to Chengdu, a stop at Leshan to visit the world largest carved-in-the rock Buddha statue.

 MYANMAR

A note from Managing Director Thomas Carnevale

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I had the pleasure of meeting many of you at ITB in Berlin last March. It was my first time there as MD of Asian Trails Myanmar and I was glad to see that interest in Myanmar is steadily picking up.

Last month, the whole of Myanmar were in the festive mood for the THINGYAN festival (also known as water festival) followed by the Myanmar New Year. This was my first Thingyan festival and I have to admit that it is indeed a funny experience that I would suggest also to other people to experience at least once.

On May 4th Myanmar will commemorate the fist anniversary of the passage of Cyclone Nargis, the country’s largest natural disaster in history. In the Delta, the area hit, the situation has much improved over the past 12 months. A lot of people lost everything however the rebuilding process is continuing at a steady pace.

The Rainy season shall soon be upon us and the first scattered rains have already started, even though Myanmar can also be visited during the monsoon period, ranging from mid may until the end of September.

The interior "dry zone" of the country, roughly corresponding to the Mandalay - Bagan - Pyay triangle receives much less precipitation then the coast and can be visited during this time without any problem. Inle Lake in Shan State also, because of its position surrounded by mountains, receives less rainfall.

Yangon, located not far from the sea, feels the impact of the monsoon, but nevertheless all visits are possible and most of the time it does not rain for the whole day. Beaches however, remain closed during these months.

Best regards,

Thomas Carnevale

Longer multi day treks to more remote regions can also be organized by the trekking house. Email problems

As most of you are already aware that we often face problems with both our outgoing and incoming emails sent to our main email address, res@asiantrails.com.mm. This is due to the unreliability of Myanmar's internet servers and to the low bandwidth available from Myanmar to the outside. We would like to remind you once again, should you not receive a timely answer from us to your request with 48hrs, to please feel free to resend your email.

MONEY AND CREDIT CARD IN MYANMAR

As advised on previous occasions we would like to remind you that in Myanmar, credit card are in general not accepted. Only very few and selected hotels, mostly in Yangon, do so, and most of the time they charge hefty fees for this service. Often, due to bad internet connection, the few credit card payment facilities at these hotels are not able to process the payment. Please kindly inform your clients to take with them, as the best mean of payment, NEW US Dollar notes in excellent condition (not torn, not broken, not damaged, not defaced), that can be exchanged upon arrived in Yangon. Please also advise clients not to change money at the airport, where the exchange rate is about half of the one practiced in downtown Yangon. Our local guide will advise clients on how to change money in order to receive competitive rates. Euros are sometimes accepted but the exchange rate practised is not competitive and we would therefore advise to bring only US Dollars. Traveller’s cheques are mostly not accepted and we strongly discourage to count on these.

 MALAYSIA

A note from Managing Director Serge Huber

Despite a little slowdown in arrivals, things are moving on rather   quickly in Malaysia. Several new properties are being built at the main tourist destinations of Kuala Lumpur and Penang to cater to the high demand for top quality accommodation. With summer approaching, an inspection trip was made to Penang and Langkawi to meet both our representatives and suppliers with the view of improving our efficiency further. We also went to Sabah with the same purpose and also to look at new products which will be incorporated into our packages. We've also embarked on a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) programme where our guests will visit a village as well as a school in Sukau, Sabah to experience their lifestyle and to partake in giving back to society.

We're confident that we're on the right track to bring our service to a new level.

On a personal note, I take joy to share with all that I've graduated from the University of South Australia with a Masters of Business Administration degree.

Truly Asia’ campaign wins top honour

TOURISM MALAYSIA’s Malaysia: Truly Asia campaign recently won the Gold Award at Berlin’s International Tourism Bourse – the world’s largest and most important annual tourism and travel fair.

The 10-year-old campaign won for its international print advertisement of the country’s multi-racial, ethnic and eco-tourism attractions based on its continuing emphasis that the country offers nearly all aspects of Asia in one destination.

To date, the Malaysia: Truly Asia campaign has won nearly 30 top international awards and citations for its high-quality TV commercials and print advertisements, and also its marketing effectiveness in helping to increase the annual number of visitors to Malaysia.

"The campaign’s basic premise that Malaysia is the melting pot of some of Asia’s greatest civilisations – the Malays, Chinese and Indians as well as other indigenous groups – still holds true and, equally important, that the essence of that is even more relevant in today’s chaotic world.

"Also, as portrayed in some of our TV commercials and print ads for the campaign, this country’s socio-cultural history reflects the influence of such European cultures as the British, the Dutch and the Portuguese on Malaysia’s multi-racial people, landmarks, festivals and cultural expressions."

Mt Kinabalu – Rising number of Climbers

There has been an increase in the number of tourists who scaled Mount Kinabalu last year compared to the two previous years.

Figures show that 48,604 tourists scaled South-East Asia’s highest mountain last year. Of the climbers, 26,161 were foreigners. This is an increase compared to the 40,390 climbers in 2007 and 39,298 in 2006. Several factors contributed to the increase, including cheaper air fares and intensive promotion by the Sabah government.

Waiting period for a permit to climb Mt Kinabalu can take up to several months depending on the accommodation available and that the Sabah Parks issue only 146 permits daily with safety given a major consideration.

The 4,095m mountain is located at Kinabalu Park in Kundasang, a World Heritage Site.

Phase Two of the renovation will be completed in the first quarter of 2010 and will cover an additional 8 rooms, while the remaining rooms and the upgraded swimming pool will be completed by the end of 2010.
All 288 guestrooms will be renovated following a design concept that is contemporary, minimal and uncluttered. They will be laced with rich texture using the regional fabrics of Borneo and complemented by the exotic Kamagong ebony timber. Soft, sand coloured basket weave on the carpet will be combined with natural coloured textiles, plush cotton and crisp linens to give guests an experience that reflects warmth, tranquillity and quiet elegance exceeding the expectations of today's business and leisure travellers with a luxurious "home-away-from-home" ambiance. The addition of a larger desk in all rooms allow ample space for in-room dining or an evening's work. In all guestrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows sweep the room with natural daylight, a feature that is unique among five-star properties in Kota Kinabalu. As for guests staying in the sea view room, they can slide open the bathroom doors and enjoy an uninterrupted view of the picturesque coral islands dotted on the South China Sea. The corridors in the hotel will also be renovated to include new carpeting, wall coverings and lighting.
During the renovation period, the rest of the hotel and all restaurants will be operating as normal. There will be minimal impact to guest comfort as the work timings will be limited to daylight hours and the sites will not be visible to hotel guests when inside the building.

Back to 3 Flights a week to Newark

Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has restored its thrice a week frequency to Newark International Airport in New Jersey effective March 28 2009, after having reduced the number of flights to two in August last year.

MAS has also change the 8.45am departure time from Kuala Lumpur to the east coast of the United States as it has inconvenienced many passengers and will now depart at around midnight. This will enable the passengers to have the rest of the day for themselves.

MAS, however, will not change its 9.50pm flight departure from Newark to Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

MAS offers value deals

Malaysia Airlines has announced special travel plans for its customers who fly domestic and international destinations to help them weather the challenging economic situation.

Under the airline’s “MHFlex, 1+1” deal, customers who buy an adult economy class ticket will be able to get another one free while the “Kids Fly Free” package allows a child below 12 to fly for free with every purchase of two adult economy class tickets.

“In times of crisis, products must be tailored to suit the wallets of consumers. People still intend to fly even during the economic crisis. We just have to provide them with options,” MAS managing director and CEO Datuk Seri Idris Jala said when unveiling nine deals under the airline’s stimulus package here yesterday.

The packages, available until the end of the year, cater to travellers in the first, business and economy classes.

Other deals includes the “Economy +” package which allows travellers to enjoy business class privileges while paying for economy class tickets.

Daily flights between KL-Stansted from July

From July 1, AirAsia X will have daily flights between London Stansted and Kuala Lumpur. AirAsia X, which now has such flights five times a week, said the daily service was due to high passenger demand.

In a recent statement released, the airline said it was offering a one-way fare from as low as RM499 through online booking at www.airasia.com.

It is for the travel period beginning July 3 to Jan 31 next year.

The statement said the KL-Stansted flight was quickly turning KL into a regional hub connecting three continents, with Australians flying into the Malaysian capital and connecting on AirAsia X to London.

“From KL, people are choosing from over 122 AirAsia routes,” said AirAsia X chief executive officer Azran Osman-Rani.

“We are offering an affordable and alternative version of the ‘Kangaroo Route’ all the way from London via KL to Melbourne, Perth and the Gold Coast in Australia.”

RESTAURANTS & VENUES

Neo- Malay cuisine

At Ibunda, the dishes all sound so out of the ordinary that you wonder if the introduction of cooking styles and ingredients from outside Asia would ever blend well with traditional Malay cuisine. But they do, and Chef Zabidi Ibrahim is the one who sees to this.

He was the award-winning chef at Gulai House, the Malay restaurant in Langkawi’s Andaman. Here at Ibunda, Zabidi has seven other chefs working with him, and the team can be seen at work in the open kitchen.

One of the two founders of Ibunda, Azlan Jamil says, “We want the dishes to suit the taste buds of locals and Westerners because we plan to bring this concept to the main cities in the world. That is why we have adopted the Western style of dining, and the food presentation is exquisite because that is how Western patrons like it.

“We want to bring distinction to Malay fine-dining food so that you don’t get a glorified version of street food here but experience a new kind of Malay cuisine that is true to its Malayness in taste and use of ingredients.”

The 70-year-old mansion in which the restaurant is sited has an elevated moat running around it, and the sound of flowing water manages to drown the noise of traffic from the Bukit Bintang area.

You feel like time has stood still, and you are far from the madness of the city.

From the moat, to the refreshing welcome drink of Ginger-lemongrass Juice with Selasih, to the exotic dishes, Ibunda may just mark a new era for Malay cuisine.

 INDONESIA

A note from Managing Director Andr? Seiler

NORTH SUMATRA – HIGHLIGHT OF WEST INDONESIA

The province on Indonesia second largest island stretches from between the Strait of Malacca and the Indian Ocean. Gateway to North Sumatra is Medan, the countries third largest city after Jakarta and Surabaya. North Sumatra offers also an opportunity (the other being Kalimantan in Borneo) to spot the rare and red haired Orang Utans in the Bukit Lawang rehabilitation centre on the edge of the gigantic Leuser National Park. It takes three to four hours drive from Medan to the centre and there are a few basic lodges as well. But the most popular tourist destination of the province is Danau Toba, a lake inside the caldera of an ancient volcano in the highlands of Sumatra. Samosir island in the middle of the lake is a little bit smaller the Singapore, but bigger then Phuket. Besides the mild climate and beautiful scenery most tourists come to Lake Toba to visit the traditional villages of the Batak, a unique tribe that arrived in Indonesia around 4000 years ago. The roofs of their houses remind visitors of those of Toraja Land in Sulawesi, but it is uncertain where they came from. There are basic hotels with direct location at the lake on the island and a first class hotel in Parapat, where the regular ferries leave to the island (one hour journey). From Parapat it takes around six hours via Berastagi, another popular highland resort, back to Medan.

There are direct flights from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur by Silk Air and Air Asia. Garuda operates daily to Medan and Padang. From Padang there are connections by Tiger Airways to Singapore.
