FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

PHI TA KHON FESTIVAL 2009

DAN SAI DISTRICT, LOEI DISRICT AND PROVINCE

JULY 26-08,2009

The Phi Ta Khon festival is unique to the Dan Sai district in Loei Province and reflects the local Isan belief in ghosts and spirits. Held once a year, it is part of a grand merit-making festival known as the "Boon Luang" festival. The origins of the Phi Ta Khon Festival can be found in the tale of Lord Buddha's last great incarnation before attaining Enlightenment. In Buddhist accounts, it is said that when Prince Vessandara, the Buddha's penultimate incarnation, returned to his city, it was such a joyous occasion that the village spirits came forth to join the welcoming parade. This very colourful and vibrant Phi Ta Khon procession is the central focus of the celebrations. In a lively re-enactment of the tale, the young men of the community dress up as "spirits" wearing long trailing costumes made from colourful strips of cloth sewn together.

UBON RATCHATHANI CANDLE FESTIVAL 2009 & THE 4 TH INTERNATIONAL WAX SCULPTURE EXHIVITON 2009

AT THUNG SRI MUANG PARK AND UBON RATCHATHANI NATIONAL MUESUM

JULY 1 – 31,2009

As the seasonal monsoon rains descend over the kingdom, it marks the beginning of the Buddhist "rain retreat" and the Buddhist Lent, or "Phansa", during which all Buddhist monks retreat to the temples. This is also an auspicious time for Buddhist ordinations as it marks a period of spiritual renewal. Known as "Khao Phansa", the Buddhist Lent is a time devoted to study and meditation. Buddhist monks remain within the temple grounds and do not venture out for a period of three months starting from the first day of the waning moon of the eighth lunar month (in July) to the fifteenth day of the waxing moon of the eleventh lunar month (in October).

As Ubon Ratchathani province prepares for the Buddhist Lent, men folk, ordained as well as laymen, with artistic skills set about the task of moulding and sculpting Lenten candles. As these works of art are to be presented as Buddhist merit-making offerings, the artisans pour their heart and soul into their craft. Many of these are fine examples of Buddhist art and sculpture. The candle festival is unique to Ubon Ratchathani province and the customs and traditions related to this Buddhist festival have been diligently preserved by local communities.

TAK BAT DOK MAI FESTIVAL

WAT PHRA PHUTTHABAT RATCHAWORAMAHAWIHAN, AMPHOE PHRA PHUTTHABAT, SARABURI

JULY 2009

The Tak Bat Dok Mai floral offering merit-making ritual is unique to Saraburi province. This ritual stands out from the merit-making activities conducted in the other parts of Thailand because in addition to the offerings of cooked rice, food, incense, candles and other conventional sacred items, the Tak Bat Dok Mai ritual includes offerings of Dok Khao Phansa flowers that only come into bloom during the Buddhist Lent, hence the origin of its name. Some villagers call the flower Dok Yung Thong (golden peacock) or Dok Hong Thong (golden swan flower).

 VIETNAM

A note from Managing Director Thuy Tien

Another busy and challenging high season lies behind us and low season is inevitably coming closer. It is a time not only to look back and evaluate our performance during the last high season, but also the moment to start with new projects such as inspection trips for our staff, trainings for our guides, networking with our suppliers and letting our management team do some brain storming for the next high season. We have seen many changes on the Vietnamese touristic map in the last months. Despite a lower demand from some Overseas markets, Vietnamese Hotels, Restaurants and transport suppliers are upgrading their facilities and fleets in a optimistic and confident outlook. We still see a respectable number of restaurants and hotels opening up these days all over the country! Domestic tourism is very strong and increasing in amazing numbers month by month. Not to forget the Vietnamese Government who is finishing a number of major infrastructure projects such as bridges and roads this summer. These all are good and strong signals towards your clients for the next high season. Vietnam didn’t change it’s amazing pace and people are working hard to make your clients next stay an even more and unforgettable one! We are ready to welcome and host your clients in Vietnam!

Countryside Tourism in China - back to the roots :

Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang Province.  Few visitors venture beyond the capital and its famous West Lake.  Asian Trails China invites you to take a look beyond.  A few hours drive on excellent expressways south of Hangzhou takes the traveller to beautiful, rarely visited sites:

Luzhai Ancient Building Group of Ming and Qing Dynasties : “There is the Imperial Palace in north China, there is Luzhai in south China”, says the expression… This complex of courtyards and halls was first built in the 12th century, when the influential Lu family settled here.  Today it is well worth a visit, especially for customers interested in fengshui and courtyard house complexes of the grandeur like the ones in Shanxi province.

The “Taiji Astrological Village” of Yuyuan near Jinhua City : The river which runs through the village used to cause heavy floods, until its course was changed into a yinyang shape on advise of Liu Bowen, an important chancellor to Emperor Zhu Yuan Zhang (1st emperor of the Ming).  The 7 water pits in the village are laid out in the shape of the stars of the Big Dipper (Bei Dou)!

The fengshui village of Guodong has a “Shuikou” – water entrance, and remnants of ramparts encircling the town.  The village is surrounded on one side by a river, on the other side by the mountains, fengshui doesn’t get much better than this!

Due its location closer to Hangzhou, the village of Zhuge has a unique layout and is a must-see for all visitors.  The entire village is designed in the shape of a triagram, with the yinyang pond in the center.

FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

THE CHINESE ZODIAC

Everyone has heard about it and about the 12 animals but you might have not heard the story below:

A long time ago, there were 12 animals; Dog, Pig, Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey and Rooster. They were arguing about who should represent the first year of the Lunar Calendar. "This first year should be a Dog year!" "No! After me." shouted the Dragon. The Gods were listening and ordered all the animals to stop arguing. The Gods said to them, " Can you see the river?" and the animals nodded. "You must swim across it and the winner will lend its name to the first year."

They all jumped in and swam as fast as they could. The Ox, a natural swimmer, led the race but the clever Rat grabbed hold of his tail, climb onto his back, and just before reaching finish line, the Rat ran along his back, down his nose and won the race. From that day forth, the Rat represents the first year of the Lunar Calendar followed by the rest of the animals according to their positions : Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig.

 MYANMAR

A note from General Manager Khin Myat Sandar

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Our Managing Director Mr. Carnevale is currently on holiday leave and it is therefore my pleasure this time to write to you.

Here in Myanmar the past two months have been quite calm, as May and June are our lowest season. We are now busy preparing offers for the upcoming high season and also getting ready to welcome our guests in the coming months.

I personally had the opportunity at the beginning of June to travel to Shan State to attend the constructions works of the new Pristine Lotus Resort & Spa Hotel, which aims to become the best hotel in the region. The hotel is managed by Aureum hotel chain, so we can expect a good level of service and accommodation. At the time of my visit, the hotel was not completed yet but already it was clear to see that it is located in a nice area and the accommodation style is on par with other Aureum managed properties in Myanmar. For more details please see below. After visiting the new property I also had the chance to do an inspection tour of properties in both Kalaw and Pindaya properties.

Another positive upcoming event is the return into service of the luxury cruise boat operated by Orient Express “Road to Mandalay”, which will make its inaugural cruise on 26th August 2009.

As always we remain at your disposal for any clarification needed and look forward to welcoming your clients to Myanmar.

Best regards,

Khin Myat Sandar

Orient Express Road to Mandalay

After a forced pause of more than one year, due to the damages sustained during Cyclone Nargis, the award winning “Road to Mandalay” boat, part of the “Orient Express” will return to service the Irrawaddy on August 26th with an inaugural cruise from Mandalay to Bagan. Cruises between the two cities as well as cruises on the upper reaches of the Irrawaddy are planned for the upcoming season. The boat underwent major renovations and repairs, creating a new range of cabins, including the new and unique Governor’s Suite, with a size of 30 sqm and three large windows for perfect sightseeing along the journey. For more information please contact us.

January 2010 Annular Eclipse

As you might be aware Myanmar will be one of the few places in the world next January 15th to witness an annular solar eclipse (the moon and sun are in line but the moon size is smaller, allowing the latter to appear as a ring around it). This phenomena will interest the central part of the country and the best place to see it will be in Shwebo, around two hours north of Myanmar by car and in Monywa, around two and a half hours West of Mandalay. The eclipse shall also be seen from Bagan and Mandalay proper, although the vision will not be as perfect as in Shwebo and Monywa.

Asian Trails has designed different programmes to allow our clients to witness this rare and spectacular event. January is one of driest and most cloud-free months in Myanmar a good vision is of course not assured but indeed very highly probable.

Please refer to the following website for a more detailed map of the areas which are poised to witness this rare event.

Malaysia: Truly Asia strikes gold again

THE “Malaysia: Truly Asia” campaign won the ISC Group another gold award for “Best Sustained Success” at the Asian Marketing Effectiveness (AME) Awards 2009 in Hong Kong recently.
In fact, the campaign has earned more awards for Malaysia than any other tourism campaign in the history of advertising, with almost 30 top international awards to its name.
The AME Awards are held annually by the Asia-Pacific leading trade magazine Media and recognises productive marketing campaigns that deliver a return on investment and redefine enterprises.

The awards also focus on presenting campaigns that attain results through innovation and create world class brands by combining creativity and effectiveness.
The campaign’s success was attributed to its having the three principal ingredients for successful branding:

? a brand character that delivers the brand promise;
? a
brand identity that is uniform, consistent and sustained; and
?
sustainability that has the ability to evolve in terms of creativity and impact.

The campaign created in 1999 also won the AME gold award last year and a silver in 2006 for “Best Long-Term Marketing and Branding”.
It also bagged the gold award in March at Berlin’s annual International Tourism Bourse – the world’s largest and most important annual tourism and travel fair.

Flying from Subang has been a dream for many passengers from the logistic perspective and some experts believe Firefly will be able to grab a slice of the market share from the other players.

For a start, Firefly is offering one-way fares from RM88 to Singapore and for the first two weeks of the month, it will have three daily flights.

The frequency will be increased to four daily flights, totalling 280 seats. This is possible after Firefly takes delivery of its seventh turboprop in the last week of June. A turboprop can seat 70 passengers.

The KL-Singapore route was a duopoly enjoyed by MAS and Singapore Airlines (SIA) before it was liberalised. Now more carriers ply the once lucrative route and Firefly’s entry is expected to give passengers an alternative, that is flying from Subang instead of KLIA and LCCT.

Currently, low-cost carriers such as AirAsia, Singapore’s Tiger Airways and Jetstar Asia ply the route alongside premium carriers such as MAS, SIA and Silk Air. Firefly and Silk Air are subsidiaries of MAS and SIA respectively. Other carriers such as Japan Airlines, Sri Lanka Airlines and Air-France KLM France also ply the route with limited frequencies.

A note from The Business Development Manager Peter Christiansen

Breakfast with the gods:

It was early Friday morning, well actually it was in the middle of the night. Wait the car to pick me up outside our Asian Trails office at 12.00pm. I’m thinking to myself “is this really a good idea?” but then again it’s a once in a lifetime experience. Boy was I in for a surprise! The car finally arrived, and I meet with Dagmar, Thomas and Daniel my companions for the trip. We had a 1 ? hours drive, before arriving at the small temple of Pura Pasaran Agung, on arrival it was pitch black and out of the dark came our personal local trekking guide, Dharma. He was a small man about 165 cm tall, after seeing him I thought to myself if he can do it so can I. The first 1 hour was through dense rainforest and only guided by our flashlight and Dharma, we slowly climbed though the forest, it wasn’t long before all of us start to take of jackets and long shirts, “too hot”. All of the sudden like a flash from the sky the terrain changed and we entered pine woods and smaller scrubs. Walking in a more open terrain the night sky came to its full glory and what a sight, the milky way was as bright as ever, even the southern cross was out.

The last part of the mountain started to tear on all my resources, the last one hour was pure climbing “thank god we where not able to see where we walking”. Our little guide was still smiling as bright as the day and told us to enjoy the amazing view. I can only speak for myself but I was done! Finally the last rock was within sight, we had made it in 3 1/2 hours. It was cold as a winters day in Denmark “old memories return” once again Dharma showed his worth, on the way up he had collected old offering to make a small fire, not everyday you have a campfire at 3142 metres. On the top at 05.45 was perfect timing. Coffee, tea and breakfast was served, out the dark smaller groups started to arrive, a total of 11 people made it to the top that morning. Exactly at 06:20 the first touch of the sun touched to peak of Mt. Agung and what a sight, suddenly I understood why the Gods choose to live at this amazing mountain, never ever have I seen such a view! The gods really knows have to serve breakfast.

Facts:

Mt. Agung is the highest mountain in Bali rising 3142 metres.

Mt. Agung is one of 74 volcano in Indonesia regarded as still active.

Mt. Agung had its last eruption in 1964 and is believe to erupt every 30 years.

The  Balinese believe that Mount Agung is a replica of  Mount Meru, the central axis of the universe.
